The Heliotrope Moth, Utetheisa lotrix (or pulchelloides) was photographed in my garden at Batemans Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Heliotrope Moths are about 25mm (1 inch) having brightly coloured white wings with red, brown and black markings. They are active by day fluttering low over the ground like a small butterfly. The caterpillars of the two varieties are differently coloured and larvae of both contain poisonous alkaloids that deter predators from eating them.
