FEATURED
The World As We See It , or as we missed it … February 2012

One of the main attractions of the little village of Tournon-sur-Rhône in the Rhône Valley, France, is the feudal castle built into solid rock, overlooking the town and the river. Tournon Castle is a listed building under the Historic Monuments.

The castle, whose foundations date back to the 10th Century, also has a section built during the Renaissance that houses the town museum. A room in the museum is devoted to Marc Seguin, a local engineer who built the first suspension bridge across the Rhône, which was completed in 1825, linking the twin cities of Tournon-sur-Rhône and Tain L’Hermitage.

Superb viewing – let climb up and look around!!!…………… Tony

  • Thanks very much Tony ! We climbed up even higher via narrow cobbled alleys to the lovely St. Vincent Church, perched high above the village.

It seems to be growing out of the rockface. Well captured Trish

  • I really love the way so many castles were built right into a solid rock base.
Thank you for your lovely comments !

Wonderful image, your title is perfect. Looks like they used the stone there to build it so it blends with the mountain so well.

  • Byron, thank you very much for your wonderful comments and fave !
We saw several castles that had been built similarly on solid rock foundations,
but this was one of the most impressive.
