The Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy is a place of Protestant denomination worship for many members of the United States Corps of Cadets. The chapel is a classic example of gothic revival architecture, with its cross-shaped floor plan, soaring arches, and ornate stone carvings. It hosts the largest church pipe organ in the world, which boasts some 23,000 individual pipes.

West Point Chapel Interior

The Cadet Chapel dominates the skyline and sets the architectural mood of the academy. Designed by architect Bertram Goodhue and completed in 1910, the neogothic Cadet Chapel replaced the Old Cadet Chapel which had been built in 1836. The Old Cadet Chapel was deconstructed and relocated to the entrance of the West Point Cemetery, where it stands today.

You would need a large pipe organ to fill this massive chapel!

  • Thanks Michael! I’m sure the 23,000 individual pipes do a wonderful job :)

Speaking of pipes, what’s that smoke behind the trees? Those cadets are probably up to no good.

  • Maybe that’s where they all were! We saw very few of the thousands who live and learn there, they were most probably learning cadet stuff or in the massive gym! I think the ‘smoke’ is steam.

Great capture of a beautiful building .Well done to Gary spotting the smoke .Probably all outside having a cigarette. lol

  • Thanks so much for your comments Lilian!
It would take a lot of cigarettes to make that much smoke outdoors, I think it was actually steam.
