The Old Whaling Church Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Designed by Fredrick Baylies, Jr., this stately church was built in 1843 for Edgartown’s Methodist whaling captains and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in New England.

Mounted Print

The Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust acquired the Church from the Methodist congregation in 1980.

It is an interdenominational church and is an ideal location for weddings, as well as concerts, with excellent acoustics.

I have always enjoyed photography and love the scope that a digital camera allows. I am retired, approaching threescore years and ten. The world around me provides endless photographic opportunities, from the abundance of nature in my own backyard to historic destinations around the world.

Very lovely capture, you had some gorgeous weather there in N.E.

  • Viv, thanks so much for your comments!
Weather was about 70:30 good:not so good, although the fog gave me some good shots and we didn’t strike rainy days until we went up the Hudson River. As you say, we did have some gorgeous weather in NE.

When they couldn’t build them as tall as we do now, they had to settle for beauty.

  • Thanks Gary!
There are some beautiful buildings around the New England Islands :)

Excellent, you have used the skew that the camera gives large structures like this to the best effect, very well don

  • Thank you Byron!
I was pleased with the result, as it was tricky to get any shot in a street that wasn’t very wide.
