The Anniversary Arch

The arch at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, was originally constructed in 1913 to span the entrance of the Australian Mutual Provident Society’s original Elizabeth Street building. When that building was demolished, AMP donated the arch to the Gardens. It was re-erected in 1968 in time for celebrations of the Gardens’ 150th Anniversary.

The intricately carved stonework shows the skilled craftsmanship of Mr Amos Vimpany, a well known local stonemason of the time. The romantic carved arch is set at the base of stone steps surrounded by tall shady trees and shrubs and is a popular site for weddings and ceremonies.

Thanks very much Bobby!

Most impressive and very well photographed, Trish. It was most fortuitous that the arch was saved for posterity. I’m looking forward to visiting Tassie one day… never been there.
Thanks so much Gary! It was fortuitous indeed and it looks totally “at home” in it’s relocated position. You must see Tassie … I lived there for most of my life and get back occasionally as I still have family there. Coming from Taree, you might want to avoid the chills of a Tassie Winter … but any time of year there is plenty to see and do.

Nice shot, Trish. Well framed with lovely light coming down the stairs and lighting the background scenery.
Merrilyn, nice to hear from you! Thanks for dropping by with such lovely comments on this great arch!

It certainly is Krys! Thanks so much for your lovely comments!

I like it too Trish, there’s just something about those steps leading away……
Thank you Jenny, the whole of the RTBG is a great place to visit.
The arch has been in it’s present place since the year my first child was born!

I guess the gardens would have to be pretty impressive to live up to the imposing entrance,Trish, but it’s Tassie so no worries there!
Thanks for your comments and fave Lance.
The arch is located within the gardens, not at the entrance, which is a large lockable affair. Tassie is known as a green place and it is usually easy to grow things well, but Mother Nature can be cruel, especially in the Midlands in times of drought … yes it happens even in Tassie … when there is no feed to support the livestock …..
