This Katydid spent a night inside the house, during which time I discovered this was not the culprit that had been eating my Hibiscus … it was a Kangaroo!
I released the Katydid onto a Eucalypt near the Hibiscus where I had found it and obligingly it stayed for some photos. My backyard, Batemans Bay, New South Wales.
Greetings Baynanno1; Wow, look to be pretty big for a Katydid ! Last night my dog tried to eat one out on my deck, it got away ! Beautiful capture ! steve
Thank you Steve. I was so pleased that I had given it a chance to live when I discovered the Kangaroo eating my Hibiscus! We put up a side fence and the Hibiscus recovered from it’s severe damage.

Have checked some figures … the Gum-leaf Katydid female can grow up to 60mm while other species vary between 20mm and 40mm long.
Yes I have to agree with sfmillner – Beautiful capture mate :-)

Great capture!!!The similarity between the leaves and itself is amazing .Glad you found out who exactly was eating your hibiscus. If you had killed it you may not have lived with the guilt hahaha
Thanks for the lovely comments Lilian. I don’t know whether I or the kangaroo got the greater surprise when we came face to face.
Thanks for sending me the link. it is truly amazing! How did you ever find it? I knew that the dead leaf was around and i really had to search for it. i imagine you did the same ting with the katydid. A wonderfully clear image…much better I am sure than any i might have found on the Internet had I searched there. Liz
