FEATURED Closeups in Nature Amazing Wildlife … February 2011
Australian Native Millipede, Oconocladosoma, a native Australian, approximately 5 centimetres or 2 inches long, curled up in defensive position with it’s sixty one pairs of legs doing a good job of protecting it’s head. It later uncurled and wandered off in my backyard at Batemans Bay, New South Wales.

oh i can see y! he’s so beautiful! one of my favorite photos of this family i’ve taken was of one curled up all protected like this as well.those legs are so beautiful…and when they start walking it’s incredible to see how FAST the move!
Thanks Carla for your comments and favourite. I have only seen one of this particular variety, but many others of various sizes and colours are for ever finding their way inside the house.

What an interesting creature. I like the way it looks…like a design an artist could have made. Isn’t nature wonderful?

No missing legs Lilian, I have a number of shots of it walking after uncurling and counted the legs to aid in identification.

Great detail- makes my skin crawl looking at it!! Wonderful capture.
Thanks for visiting and commenting. It was much easier to get the curled up shot than when it was walking (using all it’s 61 pairs of legs)!
