Photographed on the delightful Île de Porquerolles the largest of the Îles d’Hyères
located in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east of mainland France.

I found this beautiful Madonna and Child in the unassuming looking Église Sainte
Anne
which was built between 1849 and 1851. The Church overlooks a large open
area known as the Place d’Armes, formerly a garrison parade ground, but now a
village square.

Black Madonna or Black Virgin paintings and statues around the world.

The eyes have it! A most exotic looking pair, the likes of whom I’ve not seen before in a religious (Christian) painting. That’s a real find, Trish, and well photographed.

  • Thank you Gary, indeed they do ! Perhaps the subjects came from French Polynesia. I was a little surprised to find just how many Black Madonna or Black Virgin statues or paintings there are around the world. I have seen a few, most notable being the Virgin of Montserrat
