This past year I started really getting into American history. The United States is remarkable for so many reasons and I think it a shame that many Americans lack a basic knowledge of who we are, where we came from, and what it has meant in the past to be “American”. I encourage anyone who is interested in learning more to check out America: The Story of Us, a History Channel series available streaming online.
For me, one of the key things about being American is the “pioneering spirit” – the notion of stepping out into the hostile, dangerous, or simply unknown places in our world and making something for one’s self. It’s a theme that has replayed itself through history and I believe is now embodied by modern entrepreneurship. It’s takes a lot of guts and savvy to build a business from the ground up in a dog eat dog economy.
That’s just what inspired me to do a tribute to the owners of the company I work for. The two guys in charge did not take no for an answer when they started up some 20 years ago. Since then they have carved out an impressive niche in the fast paced world of technology and telephony. It was accomplished through a clear demonstration of their prowess in dynamism and innovation, both traits that I hold in high regard and believe to be core tenants of the American “pioneering-spirit”.
I challenge you all to find a bit of that spirit in yourself, within your life, and within those around you. Rise up and make yourself heard.
