Brinicle – Ice Finger of Death

I saw some footage of an arctic brinicle online many months ago. I was so stirred by the images of this cold, creeping finger of brine freezing it’s way across the antarctic ocean floor that I decided to do a tribute to one of nature’s great and frightening oddities. If you haven’t heard about this occurrence, I encourage you to check out the footage below and the link over to the BBC article (also with footage) – amazing to see it in action.

Never ceases to amaze me how often reality can be just as bizarre as fiction. The poor little starfish and anemones never had a chance.

Awesome reality check!! I never heard of this kind of thing happening for real. I definitely looks like something out of sci-fi.

  • Thanks for checking it out JR – possible subject matter for future writings?

I saw this video last week & viewed it several times. You have really captured its essence, with the emphasis on those unfortunate starfish. Great work, Bart!

  • Thanks, this one has more pointillism than anything I’ve done so far, it was a lot more dots than i would have guessed, lol
