Have YOU seen Harvey?

In early 2012 I joined a local repertory theater group’s production of the classic Mary Chase play, Harvey. I played Duane Wilson, the sanitarium strong-arm/attendant who helps Dr. Chumley and his staff with the patients. This is one of the great American comedies and it has a Pulitzer Prize to show for it. The main character, Elwood Dowd is an eternally kind and generous man who we would all do well to learn a lesson or two from.

After all, what does it really mean to be crazy in a world as mad as ours?

I encourage you all to see a local production of this show should you happen to catch wind of it. It is sure to delight and I highly recommend supporting your local theater troupes. Live theater is not unlike artwork in its demand for passion and vision, but the collaborative aspects of it are of paramount importance in a society where we all drift apart so easily. Community theatre is a fantastic forum for reinforcing bonds amongst friends, neighbors, and acquaintances.

This piece was inspired by my experiences in the show. It was, in fact, created entirely backstage in the green room where we all spent our time when not onstage. The original piece was signed by all the cast members, matted, and then given to the director at the end of the production’s run.

I want to say thank you to all the players, designers, and crew at Valley Rep Theater in Newberg, OR.
