Title: Saxophone Notes

The sultan of the brass instruments. Blues, soul, jazz, funk, reggae it don’t matter the sax can do it all.

The Crazy Notes series is my colorful tribute to musical instruments in their many forms. I am so amazed at the mechanics and beauty of these implements. They are truly functional works of art.

These pieces were created by doing some white-space masking and then watercolor washes over top. Plastic wrap was laid on top to create pools, troughs, and ridges. I sometimes leave it on to dry while other times it was removed when things had sufficiently taken shape. Finally I came back with pen and ink to add details and flare.

Inspired by the Dire Straits classic, “Sultans of Swing”…it aint what they call, rock’n’roll…

Musical whimsy – Ink on Watercolor.

I agree with your sax description – it’s the sultan and sultry! Great work, I like the abstract on the notes, eye-catching while demonstrating the sax wail :)

I like the color variation in the background and the slight grunge feel. (I enjoyed your interview with Zapow Gallery on the Beer and Illustration podcast, BTW.)
