SS Sovereign Star
SS Sovereign Star ridden by Hamish Cargill from New South Wales competing at the Melbourne Three Day Event, Cross Country phase June 8th 2008.
SS Sovereign Star is a 16.2hh, Dark Bay, 10 year old, TB/WB cross gelding owned by Gail Kroon.
Eventing is the Equestrian Triathlon – one rider and one horse in Dressage, Cross Country and then Showjumping – this is the extreme sport of Eventing at the highest level. Three-day Eventing, usually abbreviated by horse enthusiasts to “Eventing”, began as a test of the cavalry horse. Military horses were required to travel long distances, negotiate the many natural obstacles, and then perform strict parade manoeuvres. Competitions began in this event in Europe in 1902 and interest in the sport is still concentrated mainly in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Equestrian events have been on the Olympic program since 1900, when jumping events were held during the Olympics in Paris. However, equestrian events were not held again until 1912 in Stockholm. Since that year, the sport has always been on the Olympic program. The program has been remarkably constant. An interesting footnote to Olympic competition is prior to 1952, equestrian sports events during the Olympics were contested by men only. In fact, the riders had to be military athletes. More specifically, they had to be commissioned officers. In 1952 these restrictions were lifted, and since then men and women have competed against each other in the equestrian events.

Incredible capture, Adrian!! Wow! You have managed to capture not only the strength and skill but also the courage of these equine and human athletes. I’ve long been a fan of eventing and have many friends who compete and a few who have competed at very high levels but this is so far beyond my pleasure riding that all I can do is admire and enjoy the spectacle. Thanks for sharing this extremely depictive image. Wonderful!!

l was in Geelong for the weekend , but l know the rose garden and the estate very well ( in my home town after all lol )...all my shots of roses are from there ;-) great place isn’t it ?
~ Ademac replied
Dani it was beautiful….............all the roses are named and the CCI horses all jumped the bounce at the top end. There was also a fence in front of the Mansion but I could not get the light right. Great place for a shoot.
Daniella
it is a fab place for a shoot , just ask all the wedding photographers around melb !! there is also great area down the back of old buildings…..my mum is a volunteer at the park so l’m hoping to be able to get some access and do some shoots there when the weather is a bit sunnier :-)
did you smell the roses that have a ‘fruit tingles’ scent ? hahaha who knew ??
~ Ademac replied
lol…..............no missed them,
The equestrian community is so lucky to have access to the grounds for our 3 day event, there must have been 8/9 thousand people there yesterday…................no horses hurt although a couple of riders broke bones.
Steve Woodman

Hey Bars, I like the clarity in this shot…....rider has a really weird seat though, surprised he didn’t fall off, you sure he knows how to ride?.......nice post treatment…...sweet shot.
~ Ademac replied
He knows how to ride alright, if he wasn’t back there he would be out the front door, this particular jump is a drop fence, take off was about 2m above landing.
Kathleen Struckle
Another awesome capture. Love the tones and background color.

I’ve been looking at this photo for some time and its just dawned on me… The Man from Snowy River!
It may be just a reflection of my age at time the movie was released, but the image captures completely that moment when trust is tested, courage is called upon and there’s absolutely no going back. In the movie its the leap of faith when “the man from snowy river let the pony have his head”. This image would be the perfect motivational poster for me! I might have to get out the piggy bank… Awesome photo.
Leena Hedman
Fantastic capture!!! I love his expression! I would have an earful if I’d ride my horse like this, his silly position is not helping the horse at all..lol!
David Friederich
I totally love this shot. I have done some equestrian work, so I am very appreciative of your capture and your treatment of the work after. I just had a quick cross section look at all your work, and I like it a lot.
Paul Vanzella

GREAT SHOT!!!
JohnEvans
Aside from this being a great capture, is the top bar secured in such a way that it can’t come off, or just so it can’t follow the horse? ...the two meter drop and all.
Steve Buffington
Its a great action shot. But its the angle of view that puts it over the top for me. Nicely done.
skyhorse
Excellent jumps shot – I soooo wouldn’t want to be up there
Kasia Fiszer
like the tones, composition and all together it’s a great shot !
Lyn Thomsen
This is a beautiful capture of an eventing horse and rider, love the sepia tones. And thank you for the info on the history of eventing, I also believe it is the only sport where men and women compete on equal terms.
