This photo was taken in 1956 at RAF Station Dishforth, which was in those days was a Transport Command Base and home to Transport Command Modification Centre. The Valiant was still very hush hush away from its home base. Built by Vickers Aviation. Note the aircrew in white overalls.
I was at Wyton in 1955 when 543 sqdn arrived from Gaydon with Valiants B(PR)1. I was in the next hangar when one of their Valiants caught fire because a electrician had removed a motor and left the bare wires dangling and someone plugged in some power. Consequently ever time we removed a piece of radar equipment, (or any piece of electrical equipment,) we had to remove the fuse from the fuse panel. This applied throughout the RAF. I was on 58 (PR)Sqdn Canberras, at the time, just before joining 101 on Vulcans. Cheers Neil
