While the term compass is probably not applicable for interstellar travel, some means of 3-dimensional navigation is required, likely based on star mapping. This image suggests an alien device fashioned for the purpose of astral navigation. If such a device was, perhaps, left on Earth during an alien visit, and somehow wound up in, say, Area 51, there might be some question as to its purpose. If so, I hope this illustrated explanation helps.
Created in Apophysis 7x v14 tweaking parameters from Apo Pictionary. Rendered as a .png file, then blended with duplicate layers and a black background, color adjusted and sharpened in GIMP v2.6 with added lens flare, then saved in .jpg format, and finally scaled up in UF 5.04. Best if viewed larger.
