Windmills of Oia Santorini WIP#3 (G1381) by

Created for the Cityscape Workshop in Solo Exhibition Group as the third step in the translation of

Windmills of Oia, Santorini, Greece
by Lucinda Walter

Starting with Mandelbulb3D parameters from Alien Weapon Installation by fraterchaos I modified the shapes and colors as best I could in M3D to try to match the general complexity and palette of Lucinda’s wonderful photo from memory. Next, using GIMP v2.8 I have selected just a portion of the image and, using the perspective tool on just that selected rectangular portion, increased the height to resemble the taller windmill tower in Lucinda’s photo. Selecting the top portion of this new “tower”, I again used the perspective tool to greatly “pinch” the very top, forming almost a triangle, whose contrast and brightness I greatly darkened to resemble the conical roof. Then I just copied and reduced in height this tower to form the smaller windmill tower.

While I had often used this perspective tool to modify the entire image, this was the first time I had realized I could use it to distort just an isolated section, which opens up a lot of possibilities for future creativity, a great result already from this workshop, but I still have much to do to complete this translation.

Yes! Love the added blue for the sky. Love how this is coming together!!!

  • Thanks for your fave and kind comments, Lucinda, I’m so glad you are appreciative of my efforts!! Just as in painting, there are intermediate steps where many technical flaws are visible (at least to the artist) so it is a bit scary to display works in progress, but I just have to have faith that I will be able to, and will remember to, fix all these little imperfections for the final version. Unlike traditional painting, however, my first WIP in this translation was a more or less complete Mandelbulb3D image, that I am now distorting with somewhat crude digital art tools, but I certainly hope the final result will also be aesthetically pleasing, and bear a closer resemblance to your great photographic original, without losing too much of the detail and flair of the M3D rendering. :o)))
