Female Downy Woodpecker ~ Best Viewed Large by

This little lady is very aggressive. She will not tolerate any other birds near the feeder and will peck them until they leave including the larger birds like Cardinals! When she is here at our home in Southeast Missouri she rules the roost!!!

The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest North American woodpecker. There are smaller woodpeckers world wide but not in North America. The Male Downy has a red patch of feathers on the back of its head but the Female does not. The Downy can drill cavities in dead trees or limbs that measure as little as 10 cm around. This means that it can live in a wider range of habitat than can larger woodpeckers.
