If you look closely you can see the partially opened sunflower seed being held by the blue jays feet in the image on the right.
I see the Tufted Titmouse and the Nuthatch using this little trick to hold the seed with their feet while they peck the husk off of the sunflower seed. However I have never see a Blue Jay do it before. Perhaps this one is smarter that the others and watched the other birds hold the seeds with their feet while they pecked the husk off and decided to copy them. Taken at our home here in Southeast Missouri.
