This beautiful tree sits on the park like grounds of the Baptist Home for the elderly beside highway 72 near Arcadia Missouri. It is about 24 inches in diameter and since cypress lumber sells for around $6.00 per board foot this tree is worth thousands of dollars as lumber but it is worth more for its natural beauty.
The Bald Cypress tree contain an ingredient in their sap that makes them highly resistant to insects like termites. Because of this the wood from these trees can exist under ground for hundreds of years with very little decay. The Cypress Tree can be planted and grown in normal settings but do best in wet environments This is a Bald Cypress which is known for its height and protruding roots, it is a deciduous tree which grows best in swampy areas with very moist soil. The trees are commonly found in coastal regions and can live for centuries. I have seen stumps of bald cypress trees that were five and six feet in diameter. These grew in the swamps in northeastern Arkansas and were harvested in the 1930s.
