This pair of Wood Ducks visits the lake in front of our home here in Southeast Missouri often during the summer. The Wood Duck is the most colorful duck native to North America. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water, although they will take advantage of nesting boxes in wetland locations if available. We have trees and stumps in our lake that seem to attract them. They are perching ducks and will perch on a log, tree limb or stump. They were in serious decline until unregulated hunting was stopped nation wide and many locations with lakes and marshes began putting up nesting boxes for them, they have come back but are still not a common sight in most locations.
