Four teams of three mules or horses pulling a single breaking plow each are going back to the days before the introduction of the tractor in the 1880s. Teams such as these continued to work the land with the farmers until they were finally replaced by tractors in the 1920 and 30s. These four teams are owned and trained by men local to our area of Southeast Missouri USA. They are breaking the ground for the planting of corn by a local farmer who has allowed them the use of the field for their training.

Ooh, I wish I had been there to see this too! What a fantastic sight!
It was really neat to see. They are plowing 1/4 mile rows and the field is around 25 to 30 acres. There were three mule teams and one horse team. The horse team was out plowing the mule teams and had to stop and wait so they didn’t run over them. Even more surprising the horses were not draft horses but looked like quarter horses!!
I think it’s wonderful for these men to want to preserve our history, and a way of life that is LONG GONE, but……………. what do that have against tractors??? Great capture, bro….. it’s a wonderful photo that could have been taken 100 years ago!
They don’t have any thing against tractors they just love to do things like this. all four of them ride with their mules or horses pulling a camping wagon each year in a trail ride that goes over half way across the state. Keeping the mules is not cheap either. Thank you Sis

If all farmers had to do this now we would have no farms! Nice display of the working mules and their teams!
No it would not be economically possible to farm this way now, farms are to large. Thank you

You never know we may go back to living like this…..Good to know how to survive without electric power…
You never know but we would have to make a lot of implements, not many left.
