The Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) of the Wie E.Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon fame was created by animation director Chuck Jones in 1948 for Warner Bros The duo have become world famous as cartoon characters and the signature Beep Beep of the Roadrunner as it gets the best of Wile Coyote again and again is often used as an expression by people to signify some speedy event they have just preformed.
The real bird is an impressive ground running bird, though it can fly it prefers to run across the desert and can attain speeds of 17 miles per hour. The legendary roadrunner is famous for its distinctive appearance, its ground speed and its ability to eat rattlesnakes.
The roadrunner is a large, black-and-white, mottled ground bird with a distinctive head crest. It has strong feet, a long, white-tipped tail and an over sized bill.
It ranges in length from 20 to 24 inches from the tip of its tail to the end of its beak. It is a member of the Cuckoo family.
