WOW!! ~ Best Viewed Large!! by

This lovely lady hummingbird flew into the cabin cover on my ATV when I lifted the side flap and got in today. She could not find her way back out even when I raised the side window flap and she kept flying just over my head.

I very gently caught her in my cupped hands! I very gently petted her head and back and she settled down and lay quietly in my open hand?. I took her outside and opened my hand while I took this image then she flew away but continued to hover near me for a full minute.

What a great experience for me to see her so still and up close, she was so beautiful with so many shades of green and gorgeous patterns on her feathers. If you look very closely you can see patterns in her feathers around her eyes that look like eye lashes. I had never seen that feature in any of the close up images I have taken of these beautiful birds.

P.S. ~ I was glad my hand was clean when I saw this image! ☺☺☺

What an opportunity. Clever of you to take the photo using one hand too. I have to ask though – is she worth the same as the other two in the bush? :)

  • Yes my friend one in the hand is worth two in the bush ☺

Wow what an experience. I bet you were holding your breath. They are so tiny, so fragile. I’ve never seen one so close up. Do you think the eyelashes are to make the eye look bigger as a safety thing?

  • Yes I was, I didn’t want to harm her but couldn’t resist the photo op. She struggled a little right at first then when I stated petting her she just calmed down, probably frightened into a frozen state. I just do not know about the pattern around the eyes. I have hundreds of close up of them and have never seen this before. If you look in my page in the birds folio you can see over 20 close ups of them and none of them show this pattern. Maybe she had her eyes closed and it only shows then???

byron, i can’t imagine how thrilled you must have been to finally touch one of the little friends of yours… i think she flew around your head to say thank you! she is beautiful! what a great capture! I bet you dreamed about her last night… and you must have been so excited… couldn’t wait to get home and download the pictures, yelling for Julie to come see!! What an event… I’ve heard of hummingbird cake…. lol , is it good?

  • It was a thrill, I still can not figure how she got inside the cabin cover with me, it is a nylon cover with plastic windows on all sides and there are two zippers that open each side up so you can roll them up. It doesn’t go all the way to the ATV on the bottom sides so she could have been in there when I got in I guess. Julie still has not seen the image, she got home late last night. I have never heard of hummingbird cake but looked at the recipe and can not figure out why they call it that Thank you Sis.

Now this is where the fantasy takes over in my mind. I would imagine this woodland creature came to you for a purpose. Sort of a blessing. Most definitely a blessing! If I could have my way, I would see fairies, dwarfs and gnomes in dragonflies, butterflies and the likes. (Told you the fantasy would take over ;-))
This is definitely is a wonderful experience to have and thanx for sharing

  • Yes it was a very neat experience, I am just glad she was able to fly away. Thank you.

Just TOTALLY awesome MT! You are the Hummingbird Whisperer!

  • Thank you, I was really frightened that I would harm her when I caught her but she seemed fine when I pitched her into the air.
