The Mallard Duck is the most common of wild ducks that live in Northern Hemisphere wetlands. They are migratory, moving south in the fall and back north in the spring. They can stand cold climates however so some do stay the winter season in areas where it becomes very cold and has lots of snow but where the streams remain open and running. Most domestic (tame) ducks were bred from mallards. The female is called a hen, the male is called a drake.
