The box turtle is very plentiful here in Missouri.
Children like to catch them and put them in a box to keep for pets, thus the name. We discourage this because they do not do well in captivity. They have very keen eyesight and a keen sense of smell. The box turtles are mainly carnivorous from birth to about 6 years old, they eat insects some vegetation and even dead animals if they find one. After 6 they become mainly herbivores but do not eat green leaves. They like to sun on the hot asphalt of highways and most people will make sure to miss them with their cars so you seldom see where one has been ran over.
