The mature Great Blue Heron is a truly majestic bird standing four feet tall with a six foot wing span. The red spot on its wing is a gland that they use their beak to pick up the red secretion and spread it across their feathers to eliminate insect infestations.
This one is for Pamela ~ I know when she is blue a blue heron will make her feel better!! I took the image of the heron standing out in a field. I used Photoshop CS6 to select the Heron out of the image of the field and moved him to an image of a local creek near our home in Southeast Missouri.
Both Images taken with Nikon cameras, the heron with a Nikon D90 and the stream with a Nikon D40x both using the Nikkor 300mm lens on auto fucus.
