Experiment ~ Read description by

I drove into south St. Louis today to try an experiment. My IPad has a very wide angle lens. I thought it might work well with the confined spaces you have to shoot in when shooting on city streets. This church sits just south of the Anheuser Beer Brewery surrounded on all sides by typical south city houses. I was able to get the entire church in the frame of the IPad image. However the resolution of the image is really not that good. I am used to shooting 14+ mega Pixel images with a Nikon in RAW so this just didn’t have the depth of color to get the adjustments that I am normally able to use. The resolution was so bad that the sky was a disaster so I used Photoshop CS6 to remove the old sky and other background items and replace it with a good cloudy sky. The moral of this story is stick with the cameras and lens that give you good resolution images. So I can safely say the experiment failed!!

failed experiment…..good shot just the same……………..stay warm brah’

  • The IPad shoots great landscape image on days when you have blue skies and puffy white clouds, it even beats my Nikon but It sure didn’t work well here.

Beautiful work. The iPad seems to be somewhat behind the iPhone for quality of the pictures. The other thing I have found in the last two years is the camera app is EVERYTHING when taking pictures. The one that comes with the devices is not very good. There are some others that are superior and even allow for a small amount of zooming. When you zoom though, you lose the quality again. I thought I would add more to your story. :o) I like this capture.

  • You are right Bunny, I have ProCam which is a paid App for both my IPhone and IPad and it has a lot of features like tapping in the screen where you want to focus and it will select that point to focus on, zoom, night mode, anti Shake, video, self timer and a couple more. It is the best App I have found but it is what I used here so it is not fool proof. Thanks

It was a hypothesis. A guess that can be tried and you tried it. At least you’ve found out what works for you. I don’t think its that bad to be honest! Post production has brought out some fabulous detail.

  • There are so many neat looking neighborhoods with houses from back in the 1920s & 30s I guess I am going to have to break down and buy a wide angle lens for my Nikon

There are so many good photo ops in that area by the Busch plant……I like that you put in the clouds here Byron….Cool house in the back left of the image…not too shabby for an ipad photo…..

  • Thanks my friend, It was a solid cloudy day so I think I will go back when it is a bright sunny day and see if I can get better results

I have a sigma 10-20 for my nikon D60. Best thing i ever did re wide angle :))

  • I now have a a Nikon D90 which I keep a 70X330mm lens on and a Nikon D40x which I am thinking of using with a wide angle then I would not have to change lens, just grab a different camera

You might also check to see if there are some with larger formats for saving your photo in too. There a few that have a much larger file for the apps.

  • Not sure what you mean, larger formats for IPads or for Camera Apps?

When the descriptions says a high format, they are usually talking about resolution. The higher resolution means less loss.

  • I spent a while last night looking for new better camera apps. The only one I found that looked as good or better than the ones I have was Camera +
