The Central Alter in the Cathedral Basilica is around 60 feet tall which gives you an idea of how huge the inside of this cathedral really is. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis Missouri contains one of the largest mosaic collections in the world. There are 41.5 million pieces of glass tesserae ~ individual mosaic pieces about an inch square ~ placed by the German firm of August Wagner. Twenty different artists worked on the mosaics, which were installed between 1912 and 1988. Each little mosaic piece is about one inch square and every where you look there are different mosaic scenes.
The light is low in the cathedral so I used a tripod with a Nikon D90 and Nikkor 50mm lens. The camera was set on program mode ~ f1.4 ~ 1.6s ~ white balance, auto ~ light metering +1 ~ shot in RAW and edited in Photoshop CS6 Raw editor
If you are ever in St. Louis this is a must see. There is no charge of course and you are welcome to walk around and take photos of all the mosaics except during mass.
