Sthaalipaakam by Valerie Rosen

Sthaalipaakam by

Had the absolute honour of shooting a Telugu style Indian wedding in Hyderabad this weekend. I was hired for 2 days of wedding activities that allowed me only 2 hours of sleep between the 2 days. Absolutely exhausting, but what a magical cultural experience! Here is a teaser, while I keep busy polishing the rest of the final selection of images.

“Sthaalipaakam” is a ritual wherein the groom adorns the feet of the bride with silver toe rings. This also is believed that the man bends to the woman in order to claim her as his. Also in order to ward-off the evil eye, the bride is adorned by a string of black beads during the ceremony. These beads along with the silver toe rings symbolize that she is a married woman.

WOW! What a honor…and you did a fabulous job! I had never heard of this wedding tradition….it is so cool to learn something new…in a visual way!

  • Thank you so much, Karen! You wouldn’t believe how many more rituals were performed. I shot almost 2500 images in 2 days. Editing the final 250 is exhausting, but very rewarding. :-))
