I've Made a new Calendar!

Due to all of the positive feedback I received for my “Both Sides of the Glass” images captured spontaneously inside the India Railway Ticket Reservation office in Gorakhpur, India, thought I might put a little calendar together. The cover shot, A Turban at the Window is best known for making the cover of 18% Grey: A Street Photography Magazine.

Awarded for Excellence in Portrait Composition and Honors in Photography in SoJie 17!

This is a bit late, but the nomination materialized into an Award of Excellence in Portrait Composition and Honors in Photography! Pretty wonderful!

Very grateful to Fran and Team Solo, and the Judges for all of their amazing effort to make it another impressive and ever-inspiring SoJie! There were so many incredible works to be evaluated; it must have been very difficult to decide. Very grateful to have shared in the experience.

I love happy endings!
Cheers,
Val :-)

A Sale!

Very grateful to the unknown buyer of an extra large photographic print of my image, “The Plaza.” Thrilled and honored by the sale and pleased to see this image reawakened from the depths of my portfolio!! Shot this a couple of years ago in Quito, Equador. What a fascinating place to experience!

Cheers,
Val :-)

His True Colors
by Valerie Rosen

I am very excited to have my art selected to exhibit in SoJie 17, whose theme is The Portrait. The name “SoJie” comes from the first letters of Solo’s Juried Invitational Exhibition. This month is only the 17th one, ever, and 91 other artists, besides myself, are represented with Portrait style artworks or photographs.

Winners of the invitational will be announced on August 7th, when a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded in three categories: digital art, photography, and traditional art.

Non members, as well as members, ARE welcome to view all of the work nominated. So I hope that you will click the show banner or link, above, and go to view my fellow exhibitors. The

Calling all RedBubblers in MONTREAL!

I’m headed back to Montreal next week and would love to have a Meetup on Sunday July 29th. It’s been a year since our last meetup and I’d say it’s high time for a reunion!

Have chatted already with Johanne Brunet and Nathalie Chaput, but only a casual plan has come about so far. Location is yet to be decided. It’s all quite flexible.

Anyone else interested and available for a shoot?

Regarding the Ethics of Photojournalism...

“Among other things, the visual journalism community should strive to "be accurate and comprehensive in the representation of subjects; resist being manipulated by staged photo opportunities; be complete and provide context when photographing or recording subjects; avoid stereotyping individuals and groups; recognize and work to avoid presenting one’s own biases in the work; treat all subjects with respect and dignity; give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy; and intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see." ~Mickey H. Osterreicher

Indeed! A good reminder for me and all of my street photographer friends…Read here

External Flash woes...

Hi Everyone!

I’m wondering if anyone can help with an external flash issue that came up the other night.
I was shooting outside in very dark night light, in a rural setting, and a black band began to show up across the bottom of my images, increasing in thickness with each new shot. :-( Have managed to salvage most of the images with light cropping or other fancy editing tricks, but still…not good!

Any suggestions? An external flash is a new animal for me. Would really like to be sure I have full control over it before my 1st wedding job at the end of the month!!

"One Step At A Time Charitable Foundation" - Spread the Word!

Yesterday, on a leisurely walk down a main road in Pondicherry, Max Chandra walked into my lens’ view and I was soon thereafter introduced to “One Step At A Time Charitable Foundation” Please see below for links.…

By chance, I was invited to join Max Chandra to document his visit to a couple of small villages, most dramatically victim to Tamil Nadu’s recent destructive “Thane” Cyclone. Over 50 lives were lost, many homes were destroyed and basic resources were now completely out of reach for these already “untouchables”. Many oak and palm trees were completely uprooted by 170 km/hour winds and a night of unrest filled locals with exhaustion, fear, and a sense of desperation.

We arrived with massive bags of rice and bottles of water for each small village on this rural road on the outskirts
