The Funeral, A Poem

A scene:
The end of
a funeral
for an infant.
My mother attended
despite inclement weather
to watch a young couple
bury their child.
After everyone had walked away
the father knelt alone by the grave
head bowed, one hand on the small stone.
The doctor had said
“natural causes.”
But what could feel less natural
than leaving your baby
in the rain?

Your poem brought tears to my eyes, as I lost a baby boy…stillborn at full term & had to bury him & leave him in the rain…the snow…the leaves….
Even though it has been 34 years..the pain and tears still come when I think of my Derrick.

nothing, nothing feels less natural than saying goodbye to the budding potential, to the promise that will never be….
