Winter Splash on Lake Michigan by

As the waves roll in on Lake Michigan, the water splashes upward and freezes. The frozen “lake” then grows from the beach outward so what, in the summer, might be 20 feet of beach, in winter ends up being 60 or 70 feet of beach. It just keeps growing outward until it starts getting warm and gradually melts back to its original size. The ice is so thick that brave souls will actually hike out onto the ice….never a good idea as you never know where there might be a crevass! (But I’ve done it anyway….you know us photographers!)

Taken at Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon, Michigan USA
