I found this fat caterpillar in the garden yesterday, and brought him in for a photoshoot before releasing him back outside. I love the big “eyes” on his back which make him look so much more fearsome! His actual head and eyes are right at the front, and tiny. Trouble is, I don’t know what kind of caterpillar he is … does anyone know? I found him crawling on bark chips.
Update September 2010 – this seems to be the Vine Hawk-Moth or Silver-striped Hawk-Moth (Hippotion celerio) caterpillar, see here.
