About Max… my dog, best friend, confidant and pet..
When we brought him home from the shelter, we knew it would be a learning process to see what he knew, what he feared and who he was and I had every intention of finding all that out.
The first thing that I discovered is that he came from a “family” home – there were children – because he would whimper when he saw kids playing. I also know that they owned a large (van or SUV) dark vehicle – his reaction told me everything. Then I discovered that he was apparently kicked frequently.. he had an abnormal fear of feet in shoes or boots (but not just bare or in socks). He was also very hesitant to take anything from your hand – he would look away from treats offered as if they were poison. So, he was probably smacked for even sniffing what was in your hand. He did not bark, wag his tail, go upstairs, get up on furniture or give kisses.
It takes a lot of patience to bring a “rescue” animal back to being a dog and enjoying his existence. I believe that, after 7 years of being with us – he FINALLY trusts us – mostly me. I can do almost anything I want with him (except for trimming his nails – nobody but a groomer can do that).. he even allows me to give him meds!! He’s a good boy.. and I’m thankful that we found him before anyone else did.
One other thing, before I forget.. we know – by the ears – that he has Shar Pei in him but the other portions could be: pit bull, AmStaff, boxer or labrador – and those are all the guesses that people have offered up. I kinda go with the pit bull because of his beautiful face.
In September 2011, my son, his 2 kids and their dog came to live with us (his wife left, lost his job, eviction notice.. need I say more). Max was no longer a young dog and was not tolerating the extra canine and noise.
Note: Maxie started going blind in September (October 2011, it would be 7 years with him). Somewhere along the line, he suffered a mini stroke and his eyes were dialated and fixed. I’m pretty sure he could differentiate between light and dark but, he walked right into a door as if it wasn’t there (it was in shadow and usually open). Then he stopped going up stairs, sleeping on furniture or beds and then stopped going out after sunset. During the Thanksgiving holiday (when the kids were with their other grandparents), I decided that I’d seen him suffer enough so I called the vet and made that inevitable, heartbreaking appointment. He died in my arms on 11-25-11.. a more wonderful pet I’ve never known and I am so grateful to have been allowed to love him. He is so missed…

Hi, what a wonderful portrait photo. I am sure, he knows excately that you and your family love him.
We got our Henry also from a shelter. He was 1y old, had dells on his head(from being beaten with a rod or something). When my husband talked loud, then he would pee , he didn’t trust in being touched or taking something from the hand. I also suppose he was hit for that. He is a mix of Staff, boxer, and who ever knows.
It took almost 1y to show him that nobody would harm him.I changed commands with other words, like if he should leave the room, then I say"good night, Henry". He knows then, that he didn’t do anything wrong.
Today he gives us so much love, we enjoy every day with him.
    Have a nice weekend, Heidi
