The Shire is considered the supreme draft horse. It is remarkably popular in Britain and, if anything, it numbers are on the increase. The name Shire derives from the English shires of Lincoln, Leicester, Stafford and Derby.
The breed descends from England’s Great Horse of the Middle Ages. The Shire is noted for its great strength and is probably the heavies of the draft breeds (info from Eyewitness Handbook – Horses).
