The name “mustang” is a corruption of the Spanish “mestena”, meaning a group or herd of horses. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about one million wild horses in the western United States. By 1970, the herds were devastated when they were hunted to provide grazing land for cattle and sheep ranchers. They are now protected by law.
The Mustang herds originated from the horses that were brought to America by the Spanish in the 16 century (info from Eyewitness Handbook – Horses).
