Many consider the Trakehner to be Europe’s finest warmblood and the ideal competition horse. During World War II, 1,200 Trakehners, out of 25,000 registered in the East Prussian studbook, were trekked 900 miles across Europe to prevent them from falling into Soviet hands. Using this nucleus, German breeders have been able to preserve the breed.
It originated in the 13th century studs of the Teutonic Knights, in what used to be East Prussia. They used indigenous Schweiken ponies, descendants of the Tarpan, as a base. The Royal Trakehner Stud was founded by Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia in 1732, and aimed to produce active coach horses (info from Eyewitness Handbook – Horses).
