The paper still breathes through but yet the figure is so three-dimensional that it feels real and is separated from the background. Masterful.

Once again Barb, a wonderful (in the true sense of the word) work. Anyone who attempts this degree of subtlety has to be appreciative and a little awed at what you seem to accomplish so readily.

Great image you’ve captured here. Personally I am quite scared of clowns…something rather menacing to me. That said, I do find them intriguing too.

Really a fine portrait of a clown, sans the usual underlying sinister or tragic qualities, which is relief to see, a man actually enjoying his profession! It’s an excellent technical accomplishment, too, you’ve handled it wonderfully well. Artitsts stop short, don’t they, of risk with reflection and shadow, and unexpected angles, and the work is never complete because of it. I have a favorite of many Rembrandts, his youthful self portrait and the lips are bright vermillion, a great dare, works one hundred percent. I’ve never forgotten the first time I saw it. The pioneers may take the arrows but they pull them out, and go on to better lives for it.

Hi Barb – this is such an evocative picture – what medium is it? It looks as if it might me pastel? Congratulations on your 13000th view – that is very impressive. Over what period of time have these views occurred? You seem to be so prolific – are all these recent postings, work you have just completed or have you had them for a time, and not put them on Redbubble?
    Denise

  • BarbBarcikKeith replied

First the medium is colored pencil on matboard
The work posted here began in October of last year – that’s the time span – 4 months. And all of the work is different dates starting in 1995 and coming forward (for the most part, there may be older ones thrown into the pot too). I think that covers it all.. but I am very prolific.. do you think it would be a good idea to put the year on each piece?

  • Denise Martin

    Denise Martin

Barb – what brand of colour pencils do you use? I suppose like most of us you use a mix of brands. I think to put the year of execution of a piece, would be interesting when a retrospective of your work is mounted – people could then look at the date, and say “She was only ….... when that was done”!
Many thanks for replying to my questions.
    Denise

  • BarbBarcikKeith replied

I use mostly Prismacolor because that’s what I started with and am very comfortable with them. But.. I also use Derwent (more browns), Faber-Castell – blends very well with almost any other colored pencil.. and a few others whose name slips my mind. And you’re welcome!!
