Belgian
9×12 watercolor enchance colored pencil. Part of a series.
The Brabant, also known as the Belgian Heavy Draft , takes its name from one of the breed’s principal breeding areas. Although no longer well-known outside its native country, it is one of the most important heavy horse breeds, and has a strong following in the USA.
The breed is very old and is thought to descend directly from the Forest or Diluvial horse. Horses like this were known to the Romans, and from the 11th to the 16th centuries, heavy warhorses were produced in Brabant and Flanders.
