The wise, lovely child in a long ago polio epidemic

It was a long day
exhausting and sad
’I’m worn out’ I sighed
to a small boy in bed
’I’ll worn you in’ he replied
It was so beautiful
I almost cried
‘Thankyou Darling’ I said
to the little boy helpless in bed
‘I feel better already!’
Trying to keep my voice steady.

This moment you have made it live in this small and eloquently crafted verse…..sublime writing Barbara XX

  • Thankyou, I’m so glad you appreciated what this lovely support from a child who was about 5 yrs ‘old’ meant to me. I get teary if I dwell on the memory —but children can be so caring and wise

Looks like you and I have rolled with the times, as yes I do know what it is like nursing and sometimes losing. Good on you my dear

  • Thankyou Normaje, some memories really stay, luckily some lovely ones. I thought nurses were amazing, so hardworking and brave. I was just a physio, but we were all pressured in hospitals.
