Artist's Description

Scattery Island, lies at the mouth of the River Shannon near Kilrush, in south west Clare. It has been an ecclesiastical centre since early Christian times. A monastery, reputedly founded there by St Senan in the 6th century, suffered under the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries and was largely destroyed in Tudor times. The islands round tower is the tallest in Ireland. The island has been uninhabited since 1978
