Bandicoot
The slaughter has started
I really don’t know what to write. In spite of all of our efforts the killing of the kangaroos started today. I have seen a photograph of one kangaroo that was trampled to death in the panic that ensued when these gentle animals were herded into the fenced area. Wildlife supporters have contacted the RSPCA expressing concerns, only to be told that because it is on Defence land they have no juri…

Kangaroos betrayed
Belconnen kangaroo cull back on again (see previous entry). Please read below an extract from the Canberra Times Saturday 17th May.
It would appear that the government are hell bent on killing these animals.
The proposed cost of 3.5 million is absolute rubbish and a ploy to garner support for the government from tax payers.
If the killing goes ahead (and it certainly looks that way) it …

Sad News
Its a sad day dear friends. In spite of our efforts, Norton the baby wombat has just died. He had been feeding well and we were confident that he had got over the danger period but unfortunately we found him dead in his pouch when we tried to raise him for his 2pm feed. Sometimes wonder why I do this.

We still have a long way to go as it requires the cooperation of the ACT government. Below is a statement issued today 31st March by the Defence Dept.

Help stop the killing of over 400 local Kangaroos

What’s going on here?
In 2007, the Australian Department of Defence was ordered to kill 400 kangaroos on the former Belconnen Naval Transmitter Station (BNTS) by the ACT Government and under threat of prosecution by the RSPCA ACT.
Why?

Steve Wilson interview
Got a call out on Tuesday for a Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis) which was in a bathroom on a neighbouring property. Unfortunately it had escaped through a drain whole by the time I got there. So after an hour of searching I jumped back into the car to drive home. Turning on the radio and tuning into the ABC local radio, I was fascinated to find I was listening to an interview with Herpetologi…

Just rescued a joey wombat
Its 11.30 pm, I’m covered in blood from a dead wombat. The question I keep asking myself is how can the person who ran over the animal just leave it to bleed out on the side of the road without checking its pouch? It is -1deg at the present and we have just heated the wheat bag to try and raise the core temp of the joey that was inside the mothers pouch. Young wombats can be difficult to extrac…
