In the early 1970s, my father was gifted a bright red, hand-knitted cardigan by a girlfriend. The relationship did not last long, and a few years later he met my mother. As the cardigan was not a perfect fit for my father, my mother unravelled the whole piece and re-knitted it into the garment pictured here. I sometimes wonder whether the cardigan in fact did not fit well, or if my mother was trying to put her mark on the cardigan.

20 years later, I acquired this cardigan from my father. I remember wearing his clothing from time to time, especially his collection of tweed caps. I cannot remember how the cardigan came into my possession, whether I took a fancy to it and he gave it to me, or whether he was going to throw it out and I ‘rescued’ it. Either way, 20 years on and I still have it. I often wear it in winter, as it provides the most warmth of all my clothes and is particularly comfortable.

Despite its long history and frequent use, this cardigan has stood up to time remarkably.

Perhaps one day, one of my own children will have a story to tell about their Pop’s red cardigan.
