An outing with family this weekend to an air show featuring the Blue Angels was phenomenal!!!!!
A hot sunny day at Boston / Portsmouth Air Show at Portsmouth International Airport at Pease in New Hampshire proved to be a wonderful experience for us!!!! Over 30,000 people in attendance.
The Blue Angels, or the Navy Flight Demonstration Team, was organized in 1946 at the end of World War II because the Chief of Naval Operations, Chester W Nimitz, had a desire to keep the public interested in Naval Aviation. Less than a year later, the Blue Angels performed for the 1st time at Naval Air Station Jacksonville Florida. The original Blue Angels flew the Grumman F6F Hellcat and were led by LCDR Roy “Butch” Voris.
The now celebrated “Diamond Formation” was introduced in 1947 by the Blue Angels team led by LCDR Robert Clarke. Later in the 1940’s the team began flying their very first jet aircraft the Grumman F9F-2 Panther.
In 1950, the team responded to demands brought on by the Korean Conflict and the Blue Angels joined with Fighter Squadron 191.
This write up was part of promotional material from the Souvenir Program, 2010.
