T-shirt work
There’s a post in the feedback area about a new t-shirt preview. We’ve been working on one for a while – so I thought I’d share a sneak preview (below).

The date for release is yet to be settled … and along with this we’re working on hoodies and kids t-shirts.
Cheers,
Karin Taylor
o man, that’s so cool…... wow! i cannot wait, i cannot wait, i cannot wait, did i say…..i cannot wait…most exciting news for_ever_!!!!
Diesel Laws
Peter, thank you so much for this sneak peak in such a short amount of time since posting the feedback!
Personally, I’m still not sure about this version vs a real t-shirt example. But I will start a poll about it to get users feedback.
Thank you for redbubble’s awesomeness. The t-shirt designers will nod to you :D
BackStage at RB replied
Left you a comment on your poll as to real vs graphic. Hope it make sense.
o0OdemocrazyO0o
sweet would be nice…
also i notice on the shirt images the colours are rather desaturated i know this is to mimic darker cloth / ink simulation etc but it even does it on white shirts with bright colours… maybe a little heavy handed?
also a zoom around a larger image would be cool…
I am looking forward to this update and am quietly jumping up and down on my seat pumping my arm in the air…
(great news about the hoodies and kids sizes… i even know a few adults that need the kids sizes lol)
BackStage at RB replied
We really do our best to match it, it’s partly the fabric, but it’s also due to the RGB to CMYK colour shift, what with RGB being a smaller colour space. What’s important to us is that a non-RB member gets a shirt that looks like the one they bought! We can make colours look better, but we reckon for everyone involved it’s best if they are accurate.
We’re also going to have a nice big zoom.
Marie Magnusson
looks really cool, but I would definitely much prefer a mock-up preview of print on a real shirt as DL is suggesting.
a little bit off the topic, but while we’re talking tshirts, is there anything going on with the back-printing at all?
thanks for the fabulous work!!
BackStage at RB replied
It’s partly due to us wanting to be a little different, and partly because we found it’s best not to make it too realistic, we’ll never be able to get it looking exactly as it does out of the box, and if you imply that you’ve tried then we may disappoint non-RB people who turn up looking for a tee.
The first previews we ever had were photos and it wasn’t so good for us.
This shows the cut, the graphic, the scale in a decent but simple format to let the graphic really shine. It’s had good feedback.
Lara Luz
oh my this does look swanky doesn’t it!
Simon Sherry
Heh, I’m probably biased given the example used, but I really like this over the photo option. Photo previews are nice, but this offers an interesting point-of-difference imho – something that could help RB tees stand out a little more in comparison to other tee sites.
BackStage at RB replied
Cheers. Yeah, we reckon this’ll be a bit different and a bit better for us and what we have here. Important not to make it too real, or we’ll potential upset buyers.
Matt Simner
So glad this is coming (thank you) – agree with DL with the realistic view, but on the other hand that could be another thing that makes the site different to all the rest – so I need to see a bit more info on how it would work.
Will this have any impact on configuring the thumbnail cropping/placement too? (pretty please :) ) I’ve got some shirts with real detail that people would currently just skip straight past on the browse pages…
Funny how we all ask for the world when we’re shown some love :) thanks again Peter.
BackStage at RB replied
We like to be different. We also reckon that faked mock up on real tee shots are misleading. This is not an actual image of what you’re getting, it’s a graphic representation, it’s as near as dammit, but it’s a mock up. Stops people from expecting something specific in the box. Which stops them getting upset, which is good for everyone.
Scott Robinson
While I can see the merits of the realistic photo option, I must admit I find it a little dull, especially over time.
Plus from my limited programming knowledge, I`m thinking that would be a nightmare.
But what we`ve seen here in a fresh take, and I`m most excited by it. I`m assuming there`d still be a full design preview available, so those things combined will only help present our work in
the best light possible
You all continue to do us proud..
Colleen Milburn
OMG, that looks fantastic!!!! Well done, guys! :-D
Cathie Tranent
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cool.
There are plenty of templates out there that allow you to mock up photos – but this is really different!! Bring it on!
Cathie Tranent
Oh yeah – and thanks for the sneaky GOK plug!! :)

HERE IS THE POLL – REAL VS DIGITAL MOCKUP
Say your honest opinion, this is just a poll, there is no connection to whether or not this has any bearing on the final outcome. Thank you RB (Peter) for coming back to us designers so quickly!
Michael Alesich
I like this option.
I don’t mind the idea of a photographic option but I think that this works just as well if not better, especially for a site such as this.
Tracy Wallace
I like this!
Tom Douce
This Is great peter. Your preview has really exited me. I think the it’s a great success and will give buyers a better idea of what they are buying! Thankyou once again!!
Rosemary Scott
How cool is that!!!!! love it!! Can’t wait for the kids shirts too…...
MuscularTeeth
yeah looks great. so the cats out of the bag re: hoodies eh?
RPGesus
I’m not sure, while I like the idea, it almost seems a but pretentious doesn’t it?
Shirts are displayed right now in a very bland way, but they don’t try to spruce it up and throw around backgrounds and stuff to make it seem more eye catching. That’s our job.
I like the new designs sure, but I wonder if it won’t make RedBubble just look like another Zazzle…which is horribly tacky by the way.
BackStage at RB replied
Woah, we’d not like to be another Zazzle.
I think there’s some valid comments about the background, which we will address, but we hope they’re not pretentious!
The thing is, it’s important to get it on a figure to give prospective non-RB member buyers something to get a feel of, also, many people have no way to do photoshoots or mock up graphics and these can help to present their images in a more realistic way.
Personality rather than pretension was the aim.
Anne van Alkemade
absolutely awesome. I love it
Jordan Duff
Wonderful news about the display update (looks great) as well as hoodies and kids t’s. Any word on a larger print size and back printing? Is this still planned?
BackStage at RB replied
It’s on the list! It’s a long list, but it’s there.
yanmos
i agree with RPGesus, i dont know. i like the simplycity in redbubble. i think this preview needs more work
BackStage at RB replied
I’ve replied to RPGesus above so you can check that out, and anyone else above actually!
We’re going to revisit the background a little, lessen the impact, but the more relevant human graphic is probably going to stay, it’s important to have it, and it’s received good positive thoughts. We’re keen to go with graphic rather than photo for the reasons mentioned variously above.
Was there anything else about it you had trouble with?
DragonFlyer
Excellent! And hoodies!!!! Yaaay for hoodies!!!! My impression is that it’s impossible for anyone under the age of 16 to survive without a hoodie these days…. (Well – maybe 18… or 20…)
K x
Melinda Kerr
Great – cool about the kids stuff and hoodies.
dawndavies
oh kids tees, fantastic news,dawnx
davesphotograp...
wow great stuff very cool like it
RPGesus
everything aside, adding hoodies makes me giggle – I love hoodies and DragonFlyer…you don’t need to be 16 to love em :P
Pip Gerard
I so love that you’re doing this!!
But honestly… I think the fabric textured background/border is a little overwhelming and takes away from the design and the model too much. Would not just a full colour background without the edge work?
And perhaps the girls arms could be lower like the mens so it’s not covering the background image as much?
I hope I’m not sounding too picky or trying to offer advice…I don’t want to come across that way… it’s only my opinion and my opinion differs to many others…
Still love them.
And am very excited to hear about hoodie and kids tees!! thank you!!
RPGesus
Guy over in Diesel’s journal post about this made a great suggestion (if you’re listening Pete and haven’t already gone too far to take a step back) is having this as an optional interface per shirt. Various background choices and/or model choices would make things much more manageable for a lot of Bubbler’s.
BackStage at RB replied
That is clearly an option we’d have long term. It’s been on the board for over a year I’d say. But we’ll be starting with one version and then see what happens.
But that is a ‘good idea’ yes.
Nick Ford
Not sure about the females arm positions …..... ?
Bring on the hoodies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Juilee Pryor
this is really interesting and different as a template… it looks really cool…. especially for non photographic designs…. how will photo based designs look rendered like this? have you tried one out yet?.... will they be presented to look like drawings with no detail or will they look OK and be faithful to the original photo image?
the news about hoodies and kids tees is great…. and I too am thinking the girls arms are spread a bit wide…. it seems to hides a lot of the design behind her
BackStage at RB replied
The artwork uploaded will not be altered in any way, they’ll look the same as they do now basically. It will suit anything, in that, it will represent how the tee would look on graphic person. There will still be a zoom, which will hopefully be a super zoom! Hopefully…
valzart
Too much info on it..it needs to be refined …keep it simple yet complezx sweetheARTz lol! ;} happy hippy hugglez
Marie Magnusson
had to come back and have another look. it feels a bit busy I think. If the placement is true to the real thing (i.e. with the shirt wrapping around a body) this is a great option of the real-tee mock-up is too complicated to program, but the background… hmmm, I think the models shouldn’t cover anything of the design at all.
and yeah, awesome about kids sizes and hoodies!!
BackStage at RB replied
The graphic behind the model is like a half way step.
They’ll still be a super zoom, which will be more obvious than it currently is, and show the shirt better.
We’ll try and lessen the impact of the fabric so the whole thing appears less busy.
DeviousLili
Far out!! That’s going to rock in-use! :D
(I almost spilled my coffee when I read “hoodies and kids tees” ... my son has made a wish list of airplane tees here in The Bubble and has been on my arse about it for Months, haha!! For this one feature … I might come to Melbourne just to hug All of you!!)
DeviousLili
One more thing … why does the female model-person-thing look suspiciously hawt and Jo-like? (grins)
Jordan Busson
Yes!

Very awesome display.. professional and definitely up with the current times with website design and webstore merchandise displays. I hope this launches soon, because I love it!

Well Peter, if you would like any BG designs thrown at you PM or e-mail me, I love doing highlight background textures and one color tablets.
Tony Lomas
yes.
o0OdemocrazyO0o
thats great news about the zoom :D
will we have to re upload detail shots of our work or can you grab em from the hi res file we supply?
also your shirts come out sweet colourwise nice and intense i just thought the white / lite shirts shouldn’t be as dumbed down in the preview as the darker ones… i dunno just a thought :D
keep up the sweet work of keeping this so community based :D
o0OdemocrazyO0o
Hey just a silly idea but if we could do placement on back and front… could we do some sorta deal where we put Red bubble advertisment on the back eg the web address or a small RB logo for some sorta discount etc?
squirrell
What a great idea, looks wonderful.
rubyred
An improvement on the current preview. I agree with the comments above about losing the fabric pattern/texture. The style of illustration looks a little dated in my opinion. I wonder if the illustrations could be a little more contemporary, I’m not sure they sit that well with the new look of the website (it may just be the poses)?
Faizan Qureshi
I think it’s messy and takes from the actual design being sold. Plus, like rubyred said, it doesn’t really go with the clean layout of the rest of the site.
RiSH :
This one looks so different … the RB way …but I think an option of real life look such as on threadless or design by humans or zazzle would have been great too.
mingtees
I;m a bit late to weigh in here but i am finally able to access the RB site. But i agree with some of the others that the crosshatch background is annoying and detracts from the shirt and design.
And then the background design should be more to the left. And agree that the poses and drawings need work too. But otherwise moving in the right direction at least – current previews are awful.
i.itch.illustr...
I prefer it to be on a real t-shirt worn by a real person. I agree on o0OdemocrazyO0o regarding the placement of front and back too. Thanks.
Faizan Qureshi
Do we have a decision on these yet?
fleeworks
So does this mean that the design will be resized and positioned accordingly on the women’s shirts? It looks that way from the preview…I hate how currently, graphics on the women’s shirts are super huge…and if you have a design that’s supposed to be on the chest, it’s falls on the stomach for women
Anthony Pierce 27 days ago
Get rid of the background and just keep the image of the person wearing the shirt.
