Groups
Hi,
So today I’m thinking about groups. As part of the broader project to “Fix up all the obstacles that limit interaction” foreshadowed in my last post I think groups are one of the major places for interaction on RedBubble. Group activity has been consistently on the up (see graph below) ... but I can’t help but feel that groups need some attention. It’s hard to find a group … it’s hard to add your work to a group and when you do what happens next? There are many areas that require attention … but before I go and plan out all of these initiatives … I want to ask a few more fundamental questions. And I’d value your input.
Why would you host a group?
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
What is the point of your group?
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
Cheers,
Peter

Why would you host a group? Because I share a passion for the subject / topic
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group? Getting to see first hand work that people are proud of and striving to further improve
What do you dislike about hosting a group? People just dumping any old image, that is, ones that are not even remotely connected to the group’s genre, and repeating that procedure for the same image
What is the point of your group? I see the group as an area where people can go directly to search for a particular image, as opposed to search through wrongly tagged images
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? An interest on the subject or region
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with? I think it’s the common interest initially
Katagram
Why would you host a group?
I host um..10 groups now. I do it because I love RB and I want to help other members, I enjoy looking at others works
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
connecting with members, featuring the amazing work that comes through
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
_not being able to give MY reasoning for removing a piece, and feeling like since I am hosting, I personally don’t Feature nearly as often, because I host (I like to think my work is getting better)
What is the point of your group?
friendship, sharing, ego building, learning, exploring…..
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
sometimes the ppl, many times the work
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
the diversity being placed in the group..we all move to the common goal, but in so many different ways
John Robb
1. To give back in a small way to others here on the bubble – I know it sounds saccharin sweet but I believe that hosting a group doesn’t make it mine it make me help others.
2. Giving recognition to group members and helping them improve their art in the genre that the group represents. Having people feel welcome to the group.
3. The biggest dislike is that groups fracture some of the knowledge sharing here on the bubble. An example of this could be forums on equipment – I know of at least 4 areas i could go to to ask a question none of them common to each other. Group forums rarely work because of this fracturing phenomenon.
The other smaller problem is that, contrary to your thought, it is too easy to add work to multiple groups – this results in barriers (work moderation) being put in place.
4. As a resource and gallery – the points of a group are multi-faceted and thus customising group layout would help to give groups variety.
5. New things – forum posts, new art, new competitions – change and new information is why we don’t read yesterdays newspaper – or I don’t read a stale group.
6. The ability to view and interact with the areas of art I’m more intensely involved with.
Hope this helps.

Gee Peter you have been reading my mind – I ask myself these questions frequently!!!
1. I host because I love the subject, and I enjoy encouraging others.
2. Rewarding? Hmmmm …. member response/feedback, seeing members move up the learning curve and grow, knowing a need is being met.
3. Dislike? Whingers (although I have very few), inability to communicate effectively/directly with members (most don’t check group messages), forums (who has tme to go check every forum of every group they belong to?), those who consistently ignore guidelines.
4. Point of the group? To allow likeminded people to share a common passion, to hopefully collate and promote the images to appropriate viewers outside of RB, to allow people a smaller circle to mingle with – RB is so huge it is easy to become lost! – to encourage members via featured and avatar ‘rewards’.
5. Duty calls me back to a group!! There are many groups I just don’t have time to visit regularly.
6. I love the enthusiastic hosts, love the creative challenges (but PLEEEEEZE not multiple challenges at once! I’m about to leave groups which flood me with these), and really enjoy seeing themed work together in a gallery.
Hope that helps! :)

Why would you host a group? I am one of the hosts of the Flower and Foliage detail group. I enjoy supporting the site and the topic of the group is something that I really enjoy capturing myself.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group? I think it is great to be able to put a smile on someone’s face when their work is featured. I also enjoy looking at the amazing work that comes into the group each day.
What do you dislike about hosting a group? We moderate entries to enforce the 1 per 24 hour rule. Sometimes I go through several pages worth of work checking the entries and rejecting those which do not fit the guidelines or are best suited to other groups. At the end of it I am still left with several pages which I then need to go through and click on Accept on each one. Having a button to accept all in the queue would be fantastic.
What is the point of your group? To showcase quality flower and foliage art work.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? The fact that I need to moderate the entries draws me back to my group on a daily basis :P I enjoy looking at other people’s work as inspiration on how I can do things better.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with? I enjoy showcasing my work and look at what others have done for inspiration on how I can improve what I am doing.

Why would you host a group?
Because I have a love for something that I think can bring artists together, or I feel that I can help other hosts by lessening their burdens.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
I love seeing the great work that people submit.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
Dealing with artists who don’t pay attention to the rules or guidelines, and/or submit work I wouldn’t show my cat much less put on an art site. Not that all my stuff is masterpiece caliber but, you know.
What is the point of your group?
The group I started is dedicated to images from one location, and it is a delight to see my city through the eyes of residents and travelers alike.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
Challenges and features, mostly.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
The dedication of my fellow hosts and their support of the artists in the group, as well as seeing kick-ass art.

1. I host because I love the subject, I love redbubble and I love the mini communities the groups create within redbubble.
2. The rewards are involved in my first answer, plus I find moderating a great way to see images I might not have come across otherwise and new artists and writers to check out.
3. I dislike rejecting so many images from ‘serial dumpers’ but it’s a small itch rather than a debilitating disease. Communication is hard too (I think that’s been established), I always wonder who read our messages and I admit that I rarely read messages from other groups I am a member of. I try to make them ‘catchy’. Forums are another area that need attention, ours have become pretty dysfunctional despite efforts to stoke them up.
4. The purpose of one (All Out Emotion) is to share our deepest feelings and thoughts with others and to inspire each other. The purpose of the other (Major Event) is to have a place for the not so ‘artsy’, but certainly creative photographs and written pieces on the public events in our part of the world. A sharing of cultures and news, etc.
5. The groups that I most regularly check as a member are groups that have relevant information about my area, like meet ups with other local artists/photographers/writers. Those groups are by far the ones I visit most even if just to read through whats going on with other members and check out latest features. Also I like very specific groups like Minimalism or Night photography or Models, for the inspiration and motivation to try new things.
6. I enjoy meeting others mostly, I like to get to know people through interviews, featured work, etc and then have opportunities to collaborate or meet up. I have made many great friends here (and look forward to many more as I get out of my shell) thanks to groups like “Geelong Throng” and “Melbourne & Victoria”!

Thanks for taking the time to respond Jane. Much appreciated.
Lenny La Rue, IPA
First and foremost, I’ve gotta say THANK YOU! for asking the question before making changes!!! This is truly appreciated! :-D
Why would you host a group? Easy one: hosting allowed a member to hone the focus of his or her attention to a personal degree, making it more possible to find nitch artists and like-minded members.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group? Being able to bring artists together to help them find each other in a very large community.
What do you dislike about hosting a group? The “rejection” notes are a nightmare. They hurt new members who feel personally attacked, they don’t say the details necessary for hosts
to correct members with rules particulars, they are worded as if a team of people wrote each and every one of them, and there’s no way to do anything but send one or reject in utter silence. It seems this is something that changed because there’s some language that indicates we were once able to “roll our own”. :-)
What is the point of your group? Let’s use Rabbit, rabbit! as the group I’ll call mine. People love rabbits and many people’s passions about them can be brought together in a wild and odd but singular location. Wanna know what a rabbit’s name is, how to cook one, where to hunt, what to feed, how to dress, how to photograph, how to joke about, how to anything rabbit? One place has it all without lovers of rabbits being separated from eaters of rabbits or shooters (with cameras) of rabbits.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? Another easy one: common interests and need to know specifics of things like PhotoShop and my cameras.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with? Again, common interests and networking. I’ve now met a number of Red Bubble members and have enjoyed both the companionship on shoots and the better understanding of photography in general.
Groups are wonderful for many reasons, many more than I touched on here. And now that being a member doesn’t require Bmail reading for 3 hours a day, it’s all good from my point of view. That single change in Red Bubble increased my love of the site 100%!!!
Thanks again for asking before changing!!

I answered in the other post.
FlowersEtc
I guess my answer didn’t take.
Here it is again:
HOSTING—-I host in 5 groups to help the groups and RB. If the groups were mine, I would want the members to put more pride in their art by submiting only their best pieces. To me, BEST means no blurr, good lighting and clarity.. This gives RB a better face for the public.
REWARDING—-I have found hosting helps me fill my need to help people and RB.
DISLIKE—- I don’t really dislike hosting the groups. It does get irritating except, when members don’t read the rules for the group.
POINT of the GROUP—- Basically 1 group is a place to put art, 2 are about feelings, 1 is about birds and last but not least 1 is about parks.
I’m not the creator of these groups. One group is a place you can post your art because it didn’t meet criteria somewhere else. Another group (New) the orginator has his/her own idea of what picture can be accepted and only he/she monitors., etc. various things in each group.
DRAWS ME BACK—- I love seeing the wonderful art and commenting on fellow members work, also learning from them. I am meeting many wonderful people this way. Shoaib suggested a wigget for conversations, that could work for each group, but it would only work for two people I believe, so how does that help?
I ENJOY—- Meeting members, seeing new art and best of all for me, learning from some wonderful artist here on RedBubble.
Peter,
You stated it’s hard to find a group, yes but I don’t think there’s much you can do to fix that. You still have to use search.
Entering art to a group is a problem when they have requirements and have to wait for the monitor.
We could just leave it open for all and then have the monitor delete art that doesn’t fit. Then the member feels picked on when removed. I don’t see a way to keep from having hurt feelings in some cases. We all need to, as they say (suck it up) and get on with enjoying RB.
Thank you for all these great questions, I enjoyed answeriing them.

Why would you host a group?
Interest/passion in the group subject
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
Interacting with members and seeing their work
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
People not reading group criteria and sticking everything and anything in the group
GroupMail – does not work – for example in our larger groups I sent a group reminder that challenge was on and running out of time – less than a handful of images were put in the challenge as against two of the small groups, I sent a bubblemail to each member and nigh on doubled the challenge entries in both groups.
What is the point of your group?
To share an interest, allow potential purchasers to direct their attention in one spot to the images as a mass rather than trawling through the main site
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
Want to see what other people are doing and of course moderating on images offered up and in challenges – or in other groups as just a member, interest in seeing what other people see
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
Interest in other people’s work, interaction with other members
Thank you for asking
BackStage at RB replied
Thanks for your thoughts. Group communication still needs more work … and we won’t settle until there’s a consensus that it’s working well.

Why host a group? I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to give recognition to members for their work and helping new members get started in RB. I really get nothing except the self satisfaction of knowing that maybe I make it a little more pleasant, easy and enjoyable to be a member of this site.
Not to throw stones at anyone but when I started in Redbubble finding out how to do so many things – links – example images on your profile page – image sort in the art page and so many other things were just not readily availabe. So many of these things that I take for granted now I had to dig for and it has not really improved that much for new members. If I can help someone have an easier time of getting established when they start on Redbubble then there is a certain amount of satisfaction to me personally. As a group host i am often the one new members contact with their questions.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group? First the instant access to a body of art work that is of special interest to me, then being able to manage a place for those who have similar interests. I can go to any group and look at the work posted there but being a host of a group that is of special interest to me keeps me looking at the amazing work by other artist and learning so many new techniques and ideas just because it is my responsibility to be there. I host three very diverse groups yet each is in a area of art that is of special interest to me and i have learned so much from the members of each group.
What do you dislike about hosting a group? Actually there is nothing I dislike, two of my group almost run themselves. They are very little extra work for me. The third one is a writing group so it is more of a challenge but we seem to have a handle on everything now so it is enjoyable also.
What is the point of your group? Other than a location to share art of a similar genre I believe it is an inspiration to the members. The challenges have given us as hosts a tool to encourage certain types of art in our interest areas. I have received messages quite often telling me that the theme of a challenge has caused members to go out looking for that type of image.
What is the point of your group? It is a meeting place for people with similar interests. An encouragement to those people who view, show and learn from what is shared in the group.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? For me personally it is first the subject then the friendliness and helpfulness of the hosts. It is also sort of a meeting place for those on my watch list who regularly visit me and the groups we enjoy.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with? The sharing of like images, helping someone new get started in Redbubble, the appreciation I receive from the group members for the work i do as host.
There is so much more that can be said but the groups are the glue that holds this site together.
BackStage at RB replied
I agree barnsis … group are indeed the glue that holds RedBubble together. When we look at the future we want groups to become more and more central.
felinemind
Why would you host a group?
I host two groups for different reasons.
Chocoholics Anonymous because I wanted to see great imagery featuring chocolate, and I couldn’t believe that with a coffee group, sweet tooth group and others, there wasn’t one.
Alice in Wonderland because I saw several different interpretations and realised the story was a very common inspiration source for artists, so wanted to bring them all together to showcase.
Both groups are areas that I have an interest in, but don’t photograph/produced artwork in, I just wanted to see others work.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
Seeing the work on these subjects concentrated in one place.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
Not quite sure on this one…I’m a very ‘benign’ host I guess you could say, in that I have run challenges but haven’t really put a lot of effort into sourcing prizes or opportunities outside RB. I haven’t had anyone pester me for these opportunities, so I guess I’d dislike any pressure to make all groups ‘super active’ with any external requirements placed on us.
Oh, I do dislike LOTS of group news. I’d like Group News to be more than ‘this week’s features are up’ or such. I’m guilty of the ‘challenge open/voting open’ messages, but they’re the only ones I’ve posted, so there’s a greater likelihood that people will look at the message (I think??).
What is the point of your group?
See response to Q1. i.e. mainly to provide a gallery of imagery centred on niche topics.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
Can’t say I visit groups that regularly, other than the ones I host.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
The ones who do go the extra mile and provide outside opportunities (yes, I’ve contradicted myself, but I don’t really pay attention to ones that don’t). I guess it depends on what RB groups are designed for – as a gallery or a small community, or both? Perhaps it’s worth RB HQ reinvestigating the ‘gallery’ idea, so that groups could become specific areas of knowledge sharing and what not.
reflexio
Why would you host a group?
To provide support an ecouragement for people to use RB
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
Nothing really, other than helping out a little.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
People submitting work that is not their best, or is clearly different from the guidelines.
That you have to join a group, why not make it that you can submit your work to any group. If you want to join the group so that you get BBmail, group news etc then OK…. join up, but if you just want a place to place your work, why do you need to be a member.
DeviantArt has a good concept around collections that could be considered an extra feature to Groups
The search facility could work better with groups to give targeted results. e.g. it could identify matches within a group that most closely matched the search criteria.
I feel RB needs to give something to the Groups to enable them to promote themselves. e.g. one of special discounts… like we wil give 10% of all work sold within a group for a limited time, or gift certificates or discounts to winners of challenges, or pick and feature an interesting journal, also could RB use the Groups to promote work outside of RB. e.g. twitter, facebook, etc
What is the point of your group?
To create a focal point within RB
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
To see what has been featured, to look for any interesting journals.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
It is a great place see like minded work.
kathleen
Why would you host a group?
I host groups for the mainly fundamental reason of attracting particular types of artists to the ideology of a greater network. To draw like-minded activist and/or political artists to a general area of the web. I host a couple of interest groups too, but generally these are just galleries.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
Community participation, wonderfully diverse and interactive group of people…. some of my groups are a part of a larger system of activist art networks, we are cross-promoting on a constant basis.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
The constant changes in communication strategy are making things tough, group bmail may not have been effective, but the group mail doesn’t seem to go out there either… although I do like that the mail automatically copies to a forum, I used to have to post everything I bmailed in the forums and this is much more streamlined now…
I would also like to be able to de-activate voting on challenges if we so desire… as a challenge in our group is for the awareness… including the voting function cheapens the idea behind what we are trying to achieve… perhaps even have the choice of a ratings system over ‘voting’ as such. We only like to promote one artist over they others if they have reached a community action or are going above and beyond the everyday active art offering, ie. they should be involved in community activism as well while promoting the arts as a vehicle of educational change (on a personal and political level), or they create more active art than the average member, OR that they approach the group host with an idea for promotion to aid and community and/or arts movement (generally of the grassroots nature).
What is the point of your group?
Creative activism to raise awareness, to gather momentum and change, to attract artists and writers to a group of motivated people interested in not becoming a statistic. A way of gathering watchers to our cause and also a great gallery to host specific works… it is a specialist section of the broader collective … it allows creative activism on a large and aesthetic scale. The group is the audience and the stage… symbiotically one cannot survive without the other… But the groups seem to be tipped more towards the audience than the stage in that the stage-managers find it hard to shout the instructions to the actors… and then there are those actors that REFUSE to learn their lines and follow the rules and that just gets freakin tedious (particularly if it is a large group and there are many dissidents, it just gets ugly and frankly demotivating…) there should be quicker and more express ways of rejecting work without having to double check each piece… in fact I would like to see group submissions be accompanied by a one-sentence artist statement… like a real gallery. This would stop people ticking boxes willy nilly and actually make people think about where they are submitting to. The other thing is that I find it hard to remember specific guidelines of each group myself when I am looking at my list of group boxes, so to spare the host grief I generally avoid the groups I can’t remember and hence don’t participate as much as I could…. A paragraph under each group with the rules would be great.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
Wonderful people who care about the world and choose art as their medium of voice. Art. Obligation…
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
The ability to be interactive with a large group and have them approach us for grassroots activism and promotion. To see some AWESOME art that I can promote throughout our other RB groups and broader community collectives and social networks.
Roz McQuillan
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? Whilst I am not a host, I do enjoy my groups, and find many of them very motivating. I love the feedback and comments from like-minded artists, and looking at the amazing images of others with a common interest. And joining in challenges gives a little boost of motivation and another arena for feedback on my work.
I find the new format for group mail is far less involving, and also wonder when the number of ‘new’ messages will drop back.
I would also urge all host to include their maximum daily submissions with the group name – it’s so easy to forget if you belong to a number of groups.
Also, it would be great if a word search within Red Bubble could find group names, and words used in descriptions and tags!
Thanks for your ongoing work, guys!!!
Debbie Black
Why would you host a group? Could be execution of a great idea or an extension of a pre-existing group elsewhere
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group? when members take part and enjoy doing so
What do you dislike about hosting a group? constant whinging from members who don’t abide by the rules of both group and competition. it’s like they think we have no other purpose in life but to give extensive reasons why they’ve been rejected.
What is the point of your group? one is an extension of a pre-existing group elsewhere, two are for “my part of the world” and one is a learning/promotion haven
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? challenges and/or interesting discussion/ the chance to learn something new
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with? see above :D

What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
Always 100% it’s the people that make hosting a group worth while. There are over 1500 members in Freedom to Shine and there are only a handful that really communicate to us. They re the ones that make the group what it is!!! That handful of people changes though, so the constant flow of people coming and going is what really makes the group. I on occasion get a bmail from a member thanking me for the job that I do, or asking me for help. When ever I am able to help someone solve a problem RB related or otherwise, it’s a great feeling!!
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
BLATENT DISRESPECT FOR THE RULES!! AND how hard it is to get prizes for challenge winners!!
What is the point of your group?
The desire of this group is to give beginners, amateurs, and professionals a chance to shine side by side; in their own respective art forms! There is no limit to the type of work; painting ~ photography ~ writing ~ drawings ~ sketches ~ digital creations…
We desire to see the beginners grow and be helped by the pro’s… we also desire to see the pro’s excel to new and greater heights… as well as to see amateurs come into their own and really discover who they are as artists! This is a place where artists can appreciate artists and have the FREEDOM TO SHINE!!
PLEASE HAVE A LOOK IN THE FORUM!!!! WE WANT IT TO BE A PLACE FOR YOU ALL TO LEARN AS WELL AS TO TEACH!!!!
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
Challenges, good discussions in the forum, the hosts, and the subject matter of the group!
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
Ditto my answer above….
Sure hope that you are getting some answers that you needed Peter!! Once again I applaud you and your team with all your hard work and continued efforts!!

one of the big things is the annoying thing about some groups being able to have the (No Nudes) tag next to the checkbox when you are uploading work and others Not !
I have no idea if this a thing you can do as a host or not, but it is helpful when choosing the group you wish to enter a pic into,
and that damned annoying generic rejection message, personally I just ignore them, it’s not accepted OK, but if it was editable, then it would be so much better
Why would you host a group?
pure enjoyment of giving back to the bubble, and being able to have a specific niche satisfied for myself,
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
oh so much, being able to see into other peoples minds and lives with their images, the wonderful interaction with the members of the group and the friendship it engenders
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
the aforesaid points, re Checkbox and rejections
What is the point of your group?
to bring like minded people together and provide an outlet for their work
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
mostly, the amazing artists on here are what draw me to anything, but some groups seem to be filled with them and I will go back to those often
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
as above the sheer range of artists on here

Thank you for this question! Not only does it help RB receive some feedback, it has also forced me to take a step back and think about the initial reasons why I like hosting. Like everything else, hosting can become burdensome. Every now and then I need to clear my thoughts and come back to the basic reasons why I love RB!
Why would you host a group?
To help and give back to RB. Allows me see what others are doing creatively regarding a particular subject matter, in my case- All About Water
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
-Helping and mentoring RB members.
-Learning from fellow RB members.
-Meeting new members from around the world.
-Seeing how much amazing talent is in the RB community, very inspiring.
-I enjoy peoples’ enthusiasm for the subject matter and for taking part in the group.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
Finding time to moderate can be challenging.extremely frustrating.-Continuous ignorance of subject matter and rules by members
We as hosts need better tools to manage group galleries…such as a search toolmaybe by image #?, it is not very easy to locate a particular image by scrolling through 1000+ images.Challenges are a headache to manage, therefore I rarely initiate challenges anymore.but that is a lack of my own time management skills :)-At times I feel that my hosting duties take up my RB time, and it hinders my own RB work
What is the point of your group?
-To share your work revolving around water. To give and learn from others’ ideas and finished work.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
-Commitment
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
-Seeing the mixed levels of talent side by side in the gallery. Hoping that members can learn from each other and see one subject matter from different perspectives.

Why would you host a group?
I would only host a group if I had the time to do the activities required, without feeling overwhelmed. My purpose in hosting a group would be to help advance the exposure of the artists on RB, and highlight an area of artistic interest to me and others in a fair and non-judgmental way.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
It’s meeting other artists, and creating an open environment for sharing and communication, while advancing the exposure of RB and the artists on RB.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
I’m not presently hosting a group so this question is N/A.
What is the point of your group?
n/a
_What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
I’m drawn to groups that respect the artist’s and encourage artistic license and growth.
_What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
I enjoy seeing the work of others, and learning tools and techniques others use to create their art. Sharing and openness to exploring artistic styles. I enjoy groups that limit rules to the things that are necessary and not to things that dictate style or artistic aspects and consider the artists desires. I enjoy challenges because I find new artists I’ve never seen and it’s a great marketing tool. I enjoy groups that use their forums to support the learning and critique of work.
Of course the question not asked was what don’t you like about your groups. I think unless you do ask that and consider that you will not fix anything.

I looove the challenges
Stephen Mitchell
Why would you host a group?
Adelaide / South Australia ... Because I felt it important to ensure the submissions were of the highest quality, presented South Australia in it’s best light and because nobody else was stepping up to the plate.
Recycled ... Because I couldn’t find a group that met the need of artists that recycled debris and preloved goods to create art.
Redbubblers ... Because the opportunity was available and because I am a veteran bubbler. This is my way of giving back.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group?
Discovering talented artists and giving them and their artwork a few moments of feature-fame.
What do you dislike about hosting a group?
When people assume I am here 24/7 and that I can moderate their work for submission at any given moment of the day.
What is the point of your group?
The names speak for themselves.
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis?
It used to be on a daily basis, but I enjoy many different social networks now. Redbubble was the first art-network to capture my heart and soul, but I have developed an interest in Plurk, Twitter and Facebook, as well as my own site and journal over the last 12 months. Thus, I return to Redbubble once a week to see how the groups, my sales and my redbubble-friends are enjoying their time, plus to moderate the submissions to the groups I host.
What do you enjoy about the groups you’re involved with?
Meeting, talking, listening and learning from all the photographic artists.

Why would you host a group? Interest in the subject of the group and/or to help out when a group needs help and no one else will volunteer.
What do you find rewarding about hosting a group? I love to pick the features and then see them displayed on the homepage of the group (similiar to getting to pick the RB homepage it would be a thrill) and I love to see the artwork, I love to create challenges and see people get involved in them.
What do you dislike about hosting a group? I dont like the fact that I cant really promote my work because I am the one doing the features – I am in the group because I love the subject, but at the same time I cant enter challenges or feature my own work, because I wouldnt want to! whats the fun in that?! lol so therefore any work I have done in that group never gets featured and I cant enter challenges. Cant have my cake and eat it too :-)
What is the point of your group?
The point would be whatever the group is about, specializing in some kind of area of art
What draws you back to a group on a daily or weekly basis? to be honest probably if once in a while I get a feature or place in the top ten, then I know there are others that appreciate my work and that lends me to go back more than I would in a group, where my work never gets noticed or commented on or does well in challenges.

Groups!! Why host a group? Because you are dedicated to providing an exhbition space and forum for your particular field of art. The pleasures of hosting a group depend on your confidence as a true proffessional in your field, and your desire to give and receive and learn.Richard Pousette-Dart (Pollack & friends) who I was lucky enough to study under said “Teaching is learning and if you ever think you know all there is to know about your art you are Dead!!” The involement with groups depends on how good the hosts are in maintaining the integrity of the groups goals, and interaction among members…if it is outstanding then the group will produce outstanding results in repeat visits, and eventuallyget a following that is distinguished.
