Sneak preview - updated RedBubble layout
Hi,
Over the last few weeks Russ has been working on an update to the look and feel of RedBubble. The primary reason for this has been to improve the maintainability of the code – as a lot of crazy code had slipped in over the last two years. But while he was touching all of the pages Russ also updated the look and feel. I’m a big fan of Russ’ work … he’s on a long term mission to simplify the site. Anyway – you can have a sneak preview of the new look and feel here
Note: this is our staging server – which we use to test new work. The data on the staging server is not the same as the data on the live site. Your accounts won’t work, they’re be lots of half finished bit and pieces that we’re still working on et cetera et cetera. But you will get a sense of where the design is heading and the new look and feel we’re planning to release next week.
Your thoughts and comments are welcome – particularly if you find a visual display bug with the new look and feel.
Cheers,
Peter
Cheryl DeLong
Impressive :)

I don’t see much difference on the Home page – would love to have a look around but it tells me my password is invalid. Am I not supposed to go in and have a look around?
Christopher E...
Peter its actually hard to get an idea of how all will work with not being able to sign in. As far as the home page goes, looks good so far
BackStage at RB replied
It’s mainly the public facing pages that have changed – so the staging server will give you a good feel for what’s being released next week.
Jane Keats
Nice, very nice, smooth!
Jan Piller
Looks a little neater.. that’s all – good job Russ!
Evita
Looking good !!!! :D
jemimalovesbigted
Uber cool!
Karin Taylor
The homepage has a lovely facelift Peter, it’s attractive, moreso than the previous one, the lightening of the grey area in the background has warmed the feel of it up so much more, it feels more ‘friendly’ so to speak. I can’t log in either. Were we meant to?
BackStage at RB replied
Logging in doesn’t work on our test machine – but you’ll be able to click around all the public facing bit of the test site.
Karin Taylor
I also like the new tabs/buttons, much finer, more refined and less clumbsy look. I also like how you’ve utilised the space towards to top and brought the images more into view..the images look to be quite a lot large in the preview of featured works/thumbnails..and that is also good
Karin Taylor
ok thank you Peter
Karin Taylor
wow, the community page is so much easier on my eyes, i love it…great work Russ! :)
Karin Taylor
ooo the features aren’t bigger at all, they have a larger white border between them and are brought to the top of the page, i really like that, nicely spread out… it is good not having to scroll down
Christopher E...
Looks very nice, on all pages. Like the fact you dont have to scroll down as much on the other pages. Noticed the link for “new members” nice touch on that one. Looks good, Russ has done a nice job on this, however let him know this thing he has for Jo, he’s alittle late..she’s taken now :) Also, just to give all a heads up about this and since not all members have backstage on their watchlist, give a shout out on the Redbubble account? This way people wont freak out so much :)
Donna Adamski
I would have loved to try it, but it kept rejecting my login….yes I am using the correct ID and PW and accepting the stupid cookies!!! :)
Sam Fletcher
FAB new layout, I love the rounded buttons / tabs and the frames. (Also particularly like the shadow behind the art). Great work Peter, much more elegant!
Jo O'Brien
Some good pages to check out:
An artwork page
A group
A gallery page
The forums and
The public view of a profile
H M Bascom
It looks good
Joanne Bradley
Nice and clean!
Damien Mason
It’s nice and clean, and if the code is cleaned up that’s great. I am getting some floating issues in FF3 (stuff being dropped to the next line) but I assume you’ll have that fixed long before you go live :)
BackStage at RB replied
Thanks Damien – can you give us some more specific examples on the FF3 issues.
Uncle Artmonger
I like the way everything looks. Things are bigger which means easier to see. The layout works well and there seems to be seamless navigation. It will take a bit of getting used to because things are slightly different, but not so much so that it will make it a pain in the ass.
Tama Blough
Looks good – much cleaner!
Ben Ryan
Pagination on the groups pages is bunched up on the left. Would be worth checking the other places pagination is used as it’s likely to suffer the same problem.
Mousing over artwork in the groups causes a horizontal scrollbar to appear.
I’d say the design is an improvement, but like Jan said, not a big step.
BackStage at RB replied
Hey Ben – I can’t reproduce that horizontal scroll bar – what browser and page?
Joanne Bradley
Re: Jo O’Brien’s links, all great!
nodakami
Too bad the grey gradient on Homepage is gone, it looked classy while it now seems a little empty.
The inside pages seems better layered, but how sad the cute font is gone in the general menu and at the top of text on art pages.
joan warburton
It’s a very clean, simple, professional and elegant look. I think it’s perfect.
Russell Greenwood
Just FYI for everyone – the homepage is currently getting redesigned, so it’s essentially staying the same for this release (hence just the slight background change to fit with everything else), and then sometime in the near future there’s some great stuff happening with it.
Karin Taylor
@ Jo
I am in raptures, thank you for those links
my godfather! they are gorgeous…i love the new layout….doin’ backflips….
Karin Taylor
@ Russell, it’s getting better and better, i love what you’ve done…great work, it’s soooooo prettyfied :)
jarede
i really really like it – if you flip back and forth from the current front page to the new and improved – the current front page feels flat, the new and improved really pops with color and dimension!! can’t wait – its fabulous!
WendyJC
very neat and impressive!!
DeviousLili
It’s fantastic!! Looks smoother, cleaner, and has an almost widescreen effect. The colours pop more, the thumbnails and Art pages look sleek … absolutely terrific.
Russ, you’re awesome!! Great work!
Karin Taylor
i would feel very very very proud to have people view my portfolio looking all lovely like this :) That’s really valuable to me.
Jennifer Woodward
Nice, subtle changes, I imagine quite some work has gone into it all! I know many don’t like change, but I’m definitely up for more!
Jennifer Woodward
That’s not to say rb’s not already cool, he he!! :-)
Virginia McGowan
ooh put my name in [username ]and wow nice and neat
Natsky
The new RB is looking mighty fine and rosey. I love the clean, slick simplicity and had no issues looking at anything on my mac…all good.
Shelley Heath
I am liking the new revamp seems to make better use of the page real estate.
I did notice when exploring groups in the new setup there seems to be a bit of an alignment issue in the writing overview page…. titles look like there meant to be aligned centre but appear tabbed in from the right and the text is centred… would be better all aligned the same IMHO… example of what I mean is here
BTW I am using FF3.0.10 on XP Pro, just checked shows up the same alignment in IE7
D R Moore
Looks good and feels good nice work Russ,
I hope the ability to edit the “Image Feed” stays in the final release
One question Where is the group news feed in “my bubble”?
Ben Ryan
This one will do. Second image from the right. I’m using FF3 on Windows.
Ben Ryan
...actually it is triggered by mousing over all of them except the images on the far right.
Russell Greenwood
@Ben : Yep – that horizontal scrolling bug is on the current site too, it will be delt with when we roll out the next lot of Groups improvements. Didn’t get around to dealing with it this time around. Sorry!
Russell Greenwood
@Shelley – Thanks, I’ve fixed it up, definitely not meant to be like that. Will be fixed when we go live. (you won’t see it on staging yet though), cheers.
Rosalie Scanlon
Changes look great, a lot smoother and cleaner.
Marita McVeigh
looks nice!
Emma Wertheim
It looks crisper and cleaner…lovely :)
davesphotograp...
wow great work nicely done
rubyred
Nice. It looks cleaner. One thing though, the tab buttons for the popular pages (underneath the main tab nav) look a little too discreet. I think a visitor is less likely to notice the popular pages as the buttons/text are too small, we may find the popular pages are not being viewed as much?
Cathie Tranent
The number of outstanding group news items don’t decrease once you’ve read them.
Russell Greenwood
@Cathie – We’re currently remaking the entire group-news/group-notifications system, and that bit isn’t working on Staging yet. Cheers!
Dave Pearson
Initial reaction: oh my! Subtle but impressive. My eye still falls where it should fall, it doesn’t have to stray from where it knows to go, but it looks so much….. smoother?
Diesel Laws
Nice. Clean and minimal is much better.
prbimages
Excellent; I think this is a very, very impressive improvement.
One small glitchy thing I’m getting – the “page navigation links” (i.e. the ”<< Previous, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Next >>” links) which appear on the top right side of an artist’s portfolio (e.g. here) are much too close to the product links just above them. (I’m using Firefox 3.0.9 on Windows XP.)
On a related note, I think it would be better if those “page navigation links” appeared at both the top and bottom of the page. In the current design, they are at the bottom of the page; in the new design, they are at the top. Either way, one often needs to scroll the page to get to them. If they were at both the top and the bottom, this scrolling would be unnecessary.
Cheers, prb.
nodakami
I agree with prb
solareclips~Ju...
I like the new look! Nicely done Russ!!
Alison Johnston
The grey buttons are a darker grey :) Would look a little slicker if the reds matched.
Could the forum link on the community page be deleted and placed in each members quick links part of ‘mybubble’ ?
RiSH :
I think in Public Profile view … it is better to have Journal Entries at the top … rather than which groups someone is member of.
chasingsooz
It looks cleaner. Well done.
Personally though I am hanging out for the groups upgrade. There was a demo ages ago that looked great. Plus searchable tools to make featuring and deleting easier would be a godsend.
Dave Pearson
I just noticed that tags, in journal entries, aren’t wrapping. They overspill the box they live in and, in a full-screen browser on this 1024×768 screen, cause a horizontal scroll bar in the browser window. See this journal entry for example.
Russell Greenwood
@Alison Which reds aren’t matching!? :)
@chasingsooz Hang tight, it’s coming. Did you notice the subtle little change in groups to help you out a little in the meantime? Perhaps in the people section?
@Dave P Thanks – will fix that one up Monday morning!
Grant Bissett - Minister of Kerosene
really nice clean-up of the layout, top work
Brenda Anderson
hmm… 403 Forbidden… guess I missed out.
Mary Campbell
I’m getting 403 Forbidden too. Does this site work with IE?
Josh Hakman
Any further news on the Group Promote Tab?
EmeraldSun
All I get is 403 Forbidden. I use FireFox.
C J Hummel - ...
All I get is a page with 403 forbidden. I use Firefox
BackStage at RB replied
We’ve turned this off – as we’ve already released the page.
