Because common sense makes common sense
We’ve been spending some time reflecting on how diverse the RedBubble community is. There are artists of all experience levels and from all walks of life sharing art which spans a colourful assortment of subject matter.
How can we nurture an environment where, despite differences and disagreements, we are respectful and considerate of one another?
In the past we’ve written epic posts about ‘playing nice’, itemising all the sorts of content and behavior that is not welcome on RedBubble. Not only is it unpleasant to read, it makes enforcing these rules time consuming and difficult. Time that could instead be dedicated to making RedBubble even better for you.
So we’re taking a step back to look at the bigger picture.
We’re all capable of being reasonable and considerate of one another, and common sense tells us when someone or something has ‘crossed the line’. It’s good to have a few firm rules – and these will still exist and be enforced. But by encouraging self moderation for the little details, we can all enjoy some more freedom to express ourselves.
There will be times on RedBubble that you see things you do not like, or do not agree with. Instead of detailed rules and policies that consume lots of time and mental space, we are going to trial simpler content guidelines and an etiquette guide. If content or behavior can’t be resolved between those involved, we’ll review it, make a ‘common sense’ judgment and respond accordingly.
This flexibility, gives everyone freedom grow and adapt. And means we focus on doing more of the good stuff.

Great job!

Well thought out plan…. as long as everyone complies, all will be well…

I don’t envy you the huge task you have of overseeing such a huge site full of individuals, and unique and creative ones at that! But well done on this and all your ideologies for RB…... you are to be commended.
Karin Taylor
i think it’s great, good job!!

The only sensible way to go, glad you are not going to get dragged into all these petty disagreements that are popping up. I think taking the high road is usually the best plan.

I think it is a logical step in the right direction. There is no other simple way to do this. It will cause a few waves, but they will settle down, as they do elsewhere.

the new trials and simplifying things sound like a great idea!
more steps forward for this wonderful community.

An excellent framework. For me, if I find the occasional comment untoward, I simply delete it. By and large, the broader RB family is a fantastic and diverse community of people.

I did this with one of my communities, ‘self moderation’ It worked very well.

I have two questions:
Why is RB keeping open accounts of people who “helped themselves” to other people’s art?
If posting in the new help section, our email address will appear. Can our RB id appear instead?

Since I have been the victim of harassment on RB I can speak with actual knowledge that such problems have been handled well by the RB person I contacted. I also think the advice they gave at the time will apply to almost all such incidents. Ignore them. There are some not so nice people in every community. If you acknowledge their attempts to cause trouble and fight with them they will just accelerate the argument. That is not what most of us are on RB to do. The old adage “ignore them and they will go away” is usually the best policy. If it doesn’t work then RB will take a hand, effectively.

Life is to short to have to worry about what people like or don’t like. If they don’t like it, tell them not to look!!! Good for you!! ;-))
People will be people in the work place, out in public, and even here on the net. A few bad apples can really spoil a great day…. if we let them!
Thank you for all that you do to make RB one of the best web sites out there!! All of you ROCK!!

I hope people don’t abuse the guidelines and waste RB’s time as they now will become Guideline Police and Etiquette Police, and decide to report every infraction they can find to RB admin. RB needs to add a MYOB “Mind Your Own Business” Clause.
There are too many busybodies that have nothing better to do then bother Admin with every minutia. If you’re trying to run a business, you have to stop being a baby-sitter, and RB members need to respect Admin and let them do the business of growing RB.

Wow and I thought I was the grumpy one. I’m so sorry red bubble that artists have put you in the position of having to do this. I’ve had nothing but good experiences on this site. I can almost bet that it is a very few artists that are spoiling the experience for others.

This all sounds good but we all see things from our own perspective. I have been personally attacked too many times to think anything will change. I did some photojournalism work this summer. I took pictures of Sarah Palin and her family. It didn’t take long for the knives to come out.I took all but one down after the election. It cost me thousands of views but I try to move on. I am cautiously hopeful that people can be more aware of others rights to express themselves in tasteful and civil ways. I appreciate the effort to make this a better art community. I think RB is a wonderful art site. It is user friendly and I enjoy it very much. xo

Hey I am in all support of your endeavor in this direction. After all this area should not be so much of a time consuming thing for you. Seeing as you have put a great deal of time and effort into it all. I think that for the most part people here at the Big Redbubble are fair and mature, as well as reasonable, for those who are continuously unruly and unable to abide decently as set out in the guidelines fair warning has been extended to all in all fairness and consideration. I think that you deserve to simplify this aspect of the community and by rights how is more deserving than you who work harder than what so many can understand. For those who want to push the REDBUBBLE BUTTON may they suffer the Full Right of the REDBUBBLE Leadership without cause or concern for the loss of the offender(s)
