Captured at the umbrella factory in Borsarng, Sankampaeng District of Chiangmai, Thailand, with Canon Ftb and Kodachrome film in 1984. The film had a few scratches… (film scanned at 4600dpi, retouching with CS2).
In those days, northern Thailand and Chiang Mai were only just being developed for tourism so very few people visited the umbrella factory. I was always fascinated with arts & crafts and anything created by hands.
This lady let me take her photo but was very shy and did not want to look into the camera. I took two shots and both have her head down. Still… I felt privileged to be able to watch her working so meticulously, with so much passion and concentration in her work.

“My brother lived and worked in the Chiang Mai district for over 2 years engineering road building on what was then called the Columbo project in the early 80’s. It’s always good to hear stories of the real lives and practices in some areas rather than the detritus aired on certain media.”
