Oh man, Lent started yesterday!! Hmmm what to give up for Lent this year? I am not Catholic, and I don’t go to church, but Lent is important to me. I think complaining would be a good one. No whining. But it doesn’t fit the traditional Lenten concept of giving up something you love to do exactly…the traditional idea is to give up something you can’t wait to take back up again at the end. I gave up meat one year, and chocolate another, and cussing another..and my husband and I have already let go of soda so that would be cheating. Hmm what about my beloved coffee and yerba mate? No coffee shop visits or even fast food coffee? Ugh. Ok that means it’s the winner. Only home brews for 40 days. As it happens, I didn’t have any cafe beverages yesterday so I’m off to a good start.
It’s funny but the more I read about scientific studies of the brain and emotional health, the more I admire religion. In this case, I’ve been reading (never read the original) and it mentions that the best indicator of being able to control your emotions in the moment is actually being able to delay gratification…to hold off on what makes you happy now in trade for long-term benefit. So this Lent will sort of be an extension and a celebration of the other EQ exercises I’m doing.
